WASHINGTON, DC: Addressing the media on January 29, first lady Melania Trump reflected on her personal history and her connection to the American people.

Speaking at the newly renamed Trump-Kennedy Center during the world premiere of her self-titled documentary, Melania stated that she is proud to be an immigrant and an American.

Melania Trump speaks of Slovenia

While discussing how her life reflects that of the citizens she serves, Melania Trump told USA TODAY, "I’m an immigrant, I'm coming from a different country," and added, "I'm very proud to be an American citizen."

These reflections on her background come at a sensitive time for the Trump administration, which is facing opposition to its federal immigration crackdown in various states, especially Minnesota.

Melania recently called for "unity" and stated she was "against the violence" in response to protests over immigration enforcement policies.

It is to be noted that the First Lady’s path to her current role began when she moved to the United States from Slovenia in 1996 to pursue a career in modeling.

After a decade of living and working in the country, she gained her citizenship in 2006.
