WASHINGTON, DC: The holiday spirit was in full swing at Children’s National Hospital this week as first lady Melania Trump paid a heartfelt visit to young patients on December 5.

The first lady, who has made this tradition a cherished part of the season, brought warmth, gifts, and gentle reassurance to children undergoing treatment.

Melania Trump shares a heartfelt message of strength and joy

Melania Trump met with nearly a dozen children between the ages of 4 and 11, greeting each of them with a soft smile before settling in to read 'How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney?' to the eager group.

The room, decorated with twinkling Christmas trees, wrapped presents, and the presence of Santa and Mrs Claus, made the moment feel especially magical.

As she finished reading, the first lady turned to the children with a message that drew smiles from even the shyest faces. “I’m sure Santa will visit all of you this Christmas and bring you a lot of toys,” she told them warmly. “I wish you all a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I wish you a lot of strength and love.”

For the children, those words landed gently, offering a bit of comfort during a season that can be emotionally difficult for families in the hospital. Melania Trump made sure to speak individually with each child in attendance, asking about their interests, their holiday wishes, and their families.

A touching moment between Melania Trump and a young fan

One of the sweetest parts of the afternoon came as a little girl with a bright red bow shyly approached the first lady, then suddenly wrapped her arms around her in a spontaneous hug. Melania knelt down, hugging her back and chatting softly with her for a moment. It was a tiny, heartfelt exchange, but one that lit up the room.

The first lady also visited children in the hospital’s haematology and oncology wings, bringing along her own gifts. Among them were “Be Best” Christmas ornaments, a nod to the child-focused initiative she led during Donald Trump’s first term. Santa also handed Melania a festive coin etched with the words “Believe” and “Merry Christmas.”

Melania Trump thanks staff who make holidays brighter

Before leaving, Melania Trump shared a message of gratitude not just for the children, but for the people who care for them year-round. “Visiting Children’s National during the Christmas season is a tradition I cherish, and I am grateful for the opportunity to return again this year,” she said.

“Spending time with these brave children and their families is a reminder of the strength, hope and love that define the holiday spirit. I want to thank the dedicated doctors, nurses and staff at Children’s National for the exceptional care they provide during the holiday season and every day.”

She also reminded the children that President Donald Trump “is sending love and best wishes as well.”

A tradition rooted in history

The visit continues a decades-long tradition that began in the 1940s with Bess Truman, wife of former President Harry Truman.

Each year since, first ladies have brought warmth, community, and holiday cheer to children who need it most, a tradition Melania Trump says she deeply values.
