Melania’s business ventures reportedly put her at odds with Trump as marriage rumors swirl
WASHINGTON, DC: Melania Trump’s limited public appearances during President Donald Trump’s second term have raised questions about her role as first lady and her relationship with her husband.
Trump biographer Michael Wolff’s recent claim that Melania's business ventures put her in “direct conflict” with the president has brought renewed attention to her absence from public events.
Speaking on the ‘Inside Trump's Head’ podcast, Wolff claimed that White House aides were concerned about what Melania might do next. However, her senior adviser, Marc Beckman, has rejected the criticism surrounding her public profile, arguing that the first lady's work behind the scenes deserves more attention.
Michael Wolff claims Melania Trump's business ventures put her in 'direct conflict' with Donald Trump
Melania’s commercial projects include the 2026 documentary ‘Melania’ and the launch of her own production company.
Wolff argued that these ventures could create tension because Trump dislikes sharing the spotlight.
Speaking on the podcast with Coles, the Trump biographer described their relationship as “the strangest marriage in the history of all presidential marriages.”
He also claimed that White House aides were uncertain about the first lady’s plans.
“The White House doesn't know what she's going to do, and they are afraid of it,” Wolff said.
He argued that Melania’s independent projects could put her at odds with her husband, who prefers to remain the center of attention.
“This business of hers seems to make her the center of attention, which puts her kind of in direct conflict with the President of the United States, who, as we know, can't stand anyone else being the center of attention,” Wolff said.
He added that the president “doesn't mind you making money, but do not steal the limelight.”
However, Wolff’s claims about tension between the couple and concerns among White House aides have not been substantiated.
Having said that, Trump recently drew attention to his marriage during a midterm election rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he praised Melania as a “very elegant woman” and complimented her documentary. However, the president joked that he disliked the movie becoming the “number one movie,” adding, “There is only room for one star in a family, so I don’t need this movie stuff.”
Melania Trump's limited public appearances draw attention
Melania’s low public profile has added to the scrutiny surrounding her role as first lady. During the podcast discussion, Coles noted how rarely she had appeared in public in 2026.
“We really have seen almost nothing of the first lady this year,” Coles said, describing her appearance at the World Cup final in July as a surprise.
Melania also missed Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral, the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and the dignified transfer of US soldiers killed in the conflict with Iran on July 22.
A September report by The Washington Post noted that she would not attend the Republican midterm convention and had appeared only sporadically at campaign and party events.
An August audit of Melania’s public calendar by The Daily Beast found that she had appeared in photographs and at official events on 38 days that year, averaging one public appearance every 12 days.
The report also compared her speaking engagements with those of other first ladies.
Melania had delivered 29 speeches since Trump returned to office, compared with 130 by Michelle Obama and 43 by Jill Biden over the same period.
The audit described her as the “least hardworking of the millennium” and found that her workload had dropped 60 percent compared with her husband’s first presidential term.
However, it also noted that she had been more active in 2026 than in 2025.
Marc Beckman defends Melania Trump's work behind the scenes
Melania’s senior adviser, Marc Beckman, has pushed back against criticism of her limited public appearances, highlighting her work involving children, education and technology.
In an interview with Stella Escobedo, Beckman criticised media coverage of the first lady’s private life.
“The liberal media is ridiculous. They don't know anything about the first lady's personal and private life,” he said.
He urged journalists to focus on Melania’s achievements rather than speculation about the Trump family.
According to PEOPLE, Melania returned to the White House Rose Garden on August 20 after 32 days out of the public eye.
She briefly acknowledged the attention surrounding her absence.
“Good afternoon. I heard you missed me? Here I am,” she said.
Her remark offered a light response to the questions about her visibility but did not explain her schedule or plans for the remainder of the year.
Michael Wolff questions Melania Trump's residence and relationship with Donald Trump
Wolff has also challenged claims that Florida is Melania’s primary residence. In a YouTube video, he said he had filed legal papers arguing that she lives in New York City.
“This week, we have filed papers in court which point by point describe that Melania Trump lives in New York,” Wolff stated, according to The Blast.
He claimed that her living arrangements put her around 225 miles away from Trump and questioned her support for the president.
“She does not live in Florida, and she does not live side by side with her husband,” Wolff said. “She is not supporting the people's work or her husband's work.”
He further claimed that Melania spends most of her time in New York while pursuing her commercial projects.
“Rather, she is in New York City, virtually on a full-time basis, living the life or trying to live the life of a superstar. Melania the movie. Melania the New Yorker,” he said.
