MIAMI, FLORIDA: Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill appeared upbeat just hours after he was taken into custody by the police.

The 30-year-old NFL star caught an 80-yard catch for a score on Sunday, September 8, during the Dolphins' season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He celebrated by pretending to be handcuffed, which was an uncommon end-zone celebration.

Tyreek Hill mimics being detained by his teammate

Tyreek Hill recreated the scenario he had encountered earlier that morning by walking along the wall of supporters in the end zone with his hands behind his back, accompanied by teammate Jaylen Waddle, who pretended to be a police officer handcuffing him.

The unusual end-zone celebration occurred during the third quarter of the Miami team's 20-17 victory at the Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium, which is located just a block from the location of Hill's earlier arrest.

Why was Tyreek Hill arrested?

After many videos of Tyreek Hill's roadside detention surfaced on social media, fans became concerned that the top receiver might not be able to play in the game. The videos showed Hill lying face-down on the ground, handcuffed, and surrounded by four Miami-Dade police officers.

However, a few moments later, the team stated that though Hill was “briefly detained by police” after being “pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium." He was since released and joined his teammates on the field later in the day.

Tyreek Hill's agent addresses the incident

Tyreek Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN shortly after the incident on Sunday, “How things escalated into the situation that they were in, in handcuffs and being held on the ground with police, is mind-boggling to me. I’m deeply concerned by that. Very troubled.”

“We will be looking into it,” Rosenhaus continued. “We will be investigating this. We will look out for Tyreek, but I’m not going to make any allegations at this time. The most important thing is Tyreek is OK physically.”

“Mentally,” however, the wide receiver “was very distraught about what happened,” the agent added.

Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V Daniels told People Magazine in a statement that she has “initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter.”

“One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is being conducted,” Daniels’ statement continued. “I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.”

In an earlier statement, the director also told the outlet that she was reviewing “all details surrounding the incident,” as well as "available body camera footage.”
