Michael Douglas recalls heartfelt talks with Rob Reiner about parenting sons with addiction
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Michael Douglas shared rare insight into deeply personal conversations he once had with filmmaker Rob Reiner during a CBS News special that aired on Sunday.
The actor reflected on how both men leaned on each other while navigating the heartbreak of parenting sons battling addiction.
Michael Douglas reflects on shared struggles with Rob Reiner as fathers
Appearing in the CBS News special 'Rob Reiner: Scenes from a Life', Michael Douglas, 81, spoke candidly about the bond he shared with Reiner that went beyond Hollywood collaborations and into the painful realities of family life.
“With this terrible tragedy, we're realizing how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son,” Douglas said during the program.
“I also had a son who had drug issues. And I'm happy to say he's overcome them and he's living a prosperous life. But we talked a lot about that: What you can do as a parent, what you can't do.”
Douglas’ comments highlighted how their conversations centered on the limits of parental control, especially when addiction takes hold. Despite their professional success, both men faced similar fears behind closed doors.
“So knowing with all of that going on behind the scenes, this was a man who always gave you his best,” Douglas added.
A professional partnership shaped by personal understanding
Douglas and Reiner worked together on multiple films, including 'The American President' (1995) and 'And So It Goes' (2014). But Douglas suggested that their connection deepened as they confronted parallel struggles at home.
The CBS special aired amid renewed public attention on Reiner’s personal life following a devastating family tragedy earlier this month.
Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec 14. Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has since been charged with murder in connection with their deaths.
Nick had struggled with addiction since his teenage years and had been in and out of rehabilitation since the age of 15. During those years, addiction reportedly strained the family while also shaping Reiner’s work.
Michael Douglas and son Cameron’s journey through addiction and recovery
Douglas has long been open about his own family’s battle with addiction, particularly his relationship with his son Cameron Douglas, now 47.
In a 2019 interview with PEOPLE, Douglas reflected on the darkest moments of that journey.
“There were moments when hope dwindled ... [and] I thought I was going to lose him,” he said at the time.
Cameron has since spoken publicly about his recovery and the role his father played during his most difficult years. In May 2023, Cameron told PEOPLE that he learned critical lessons from Douglas’ approach to parenting.
“Lead by example,” Cameron said, adding that his father emphasized “just being there for” one’s child.
“I think when somebody is really struggling, to have love and support is crucial,” Cameron explained. “Because at least for myself, there are some parts of my life that were so dark that I was maybe starting to lose hope for myself.”
He added that having consistent love from people he respected helped pull him back from that place.
“Then having the love and support of people that you also love and respect, it was just critical for me,” Cameron said.
Rob Reiner’s son Nick and the long road toward recovery
Nick Reiner’s struggles with addiction were not hidden from public view. In 2015, he co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film 'Being Charlie', which his father directed. The film loosely explored their father-son relationship during what Reiner once described as “dark years.”
A source previously told PEOPLE that Rob and Michele Reiner “tried everything” to help their son and never stopped believing he could recover.
In a September 2025 interview with NPR, Rob Reiner shared an optimistic update, saying Nick “hasn't been doing drugs for over six years.”
“He's in a really good place,” Reiner said at the time.
