MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Tensions in Minneapolis have reached a boiling point as new videos circulating online show Minneapolis protesters smashing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and FBI vehicles in the wake of a spate of shootings involving ICE agents.

The latest flashpoint comes just days after an ICE officer fatally shot 37‑year‑old Renee Nicole Good, sparking widespread outrage, and a subsequent Wednesday night (January 14) arrest operation in north Minneapolis ended with federal agents opening fire after officials say a suspect and others attacked an officer with a shovel.

Minneapolis officials called for calm after a federal immigration officer shot a man. The city said on X that the man was hospitalized with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.

“We understand there is anger,” the city tweeted. “We ask the public to remain calm.”

In another post, city officials demanded that federal immigration authorities leave both the city and the state immediately. “We stand with our immigrant and refugee communities — know that you have our full support,” the city added.

DHS reports what happened between ICE and a Venezuelan man

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said a federal officer shot a Venezuelan man in the leg in Minneapolis after the man allegedly fled a targeted traffic stop and attacked the officer. The officer stopped the man at 6.50 pm local time. The mandrove away, crashed into a parked car, and ran on foot, the department said.

As per the DHS, the officer chased him, the man, who the department said was in the country illegally, and assaulted the officer.

During the struggle, two other men apparently came out of an apartment and attacked the officer with a snow shovel and a broom handle. The man also picked up a shovel or broomstick and attacked the officer again, the department said.

“Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life,” the statement said. The man was shot in the leg. All three men barricaded themselves in the apartment but were later taken into custody.

The department said both the man who was shot and the officer were hospitalized.
