NBC fears Savannah Guthrie will leave network after Hoda Kotb, replacements vie for open spot
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Savannah Guthrie is reportedly being wooed by the NBC network to retain her spot on the 'Today' show, after her co-host Hoda Kotb announced her departure on Thursday, September 26, reported the Daily Mail.
Kotb's announcement came as a surprise for viewers, as she had helmed the flagship show for 17 years. The 60-year-old explained her decision saying that she now wanted to "try something new." Her official departure from the show is set to happen in early 2025.
Why is NBC eager to retain Savannah Guthrie?
Insiders have revealed to the Daily Mail that the producers at NBC are trying their best not to "overhaul everything" during the period of change. As such, they appear desperate not to let Savannah Guthrie follow Hoda Kotb out their doors.
"Savannah's contract is coming up next year and they want to keep her and will be doing anything they can to continue their relationship with Savannah as a means of not overhauling everything," the source told the publication.
They further pointedly added that "the replacement (for Kotb) will be from people who are already there rather than paying an outsider tons of money to sit with Savannah."
Guthrie had initially signed a $7 million-a-year contract with the show. It was increased to $8 million, and then to an undisclosed amount in 2020 after she impressed her bosses by moderating a town hall event with then-president Donald Trump.
Who are the top contenders to replace Hoda Kotb?
As per sources, Craig Melvin and Laura Jarrett are being considered as Hoda Kotb's replacement in the show.
Melvin joined the network as a daytime anchor in 2011 and began hosting Today's 'Third Hour' in 2018. Jarrett joined the show as a contributor in 2018, before which she co-hosted the show 'Early Start' on CNN.
"Craig Melvin and Laura Jarrett are both on top of the list to be the heir apparent at this time," stated an insider. "NBC is looking to place one of them in Hoda's position, whomever the audience gravitates to more will be the most likely replacement."
"The anchors would all love the opportunity to take Hoda's spot, Sheinelle Jones would be interested, but honestly everyone is championing for Laura or Craig," they added.
Internet finds the idea of Savannah Guthrie leaving NBC appealing

"No loss if Savannah leaves; odds are she won't leave," wrote a person.
"They are replaceable," shared another.
"Oh I hope and pray Savannah also quits," expressed someone else.
"Savannah doesn't come across as someone who is easy to get along with, I don't think she and Laura have the right chemistry together. Next..." commented one individual.
"Please let Savannah go. Don't renew her contract," stated a user.
