In the interview, White revealed he had originally planned to propose this summer, but after Dobrev’s unexpected dirt biking accident, he reconsidered.
His next idea was to pop the question in Cape Town, South Africa, in November.
But when the 'Love Hard' actress became suspicious of his intentions, he changed plans again, setting his sights on New York, where he planned to propose at a restaurant. However, Dobrev’s feeling under the weather threw off that attempt, too.

Finally, White resorted to a creative solution: sending Dobrev a fake invitation to an intimate CFDA Awards and Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour. Dobrev accepted the invitation, unaware of what was actually in store.
The actress recalled being in a hurry to the dinner, concerned about running late, and "panicking that Anna’s waiting for me."
Nina Dobrev says she 'froze' when Shaun White proposed
When Nina Dobrev arrived at the Golden Swan venue, the quietness of the scene heightened her nerves, as she worried she had missed the cocktail hour.
Dobrev opened the door to find White standing in front of an arch of white roses with a photographer, finally putting all the pieces together.
“I went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,” she told Vogue, noting how “legitimate” White’s invitation appeared.
Still not fully grasping what was happening, Dobrev began to repeatedly say, “No, no, no!” White, however, remained undeterred.
He told the outlet that he could tell Dobrev was nervous because “when she’s nervous she’ll make jokes.”
“She’s like, ‘So, wait, Anna’s not here?’” White joked, sharing how the moment unfolded. Then, when White got down on one knee, Dobrev said she “blacked out,” only recalling that “he said all the right things.”
After the proposal, Dobrev and White celebrated their engagement with friends, enjoying champagne and caviar well into the night.
“Eventually we realized — other than the caviar — we hadn’t eaten anything,” Dobrev said, so they ordered Shake Shack and dumplings to the venue to finish the night.
