VATICAN CITY: The world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88 after enduring months of ill health.

As the bishop of Rome is laid to rest, whispers of a centuries-old prophecy by Nostradamus have resurfaced, suggesting that even his death had been foretold.

Nostradamus’ chilling prophecy resurfaces after Pope Francis’ death

In a twist almost too eerie to ignore, it’s now being claimed that the French astrologer Nostradamus, born Michel de Nostredame, had predicted this moment centuries ago in his 1555 book 'Les Propheties'.

According to interpretations of Nostradamus’ quatrains, he foresaw the death of "a very old" pope and the subsequent weakening of the Catholic Church’s power.

The chilling passage reads: "Through the death of a very old Pontiff / A Roman of good age will be elected / Of him it will be said that he weakens his seat / But long will he sit and in mordant activity," as per MailOnline.

Another prophetic verse has also drawn attention: "A young man of dark skin with the help of the great king will deliver the purse to another of red colour."

While its full meaning remains mysterious, believers of Nostradamus' predictions are quick to link these verses to the uncertain times now facing the Vatican. Following the period of mourning, the cardinals will gather for a mysterious conclave to elect a new pontiff.

Nostradamus’ eerie accuracies

Over the centuries, Nostradamus’ forecasts have been credited with predicting major world events, including Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, the assassination of John F Kennedy, the COVID-19 pandemic, and even the UK's ongoing cost of living crisis.

Whether coincidence or cosmic fate, the parallels are hard to dismiss.

A statement shared by Cardinal Kevin Farrell captured the profound sorrow of the Catholic Church on the death of Pope Francis.

"At 7.35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father," the message began.

"His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalised," he added.

"With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God, One and Tribune," Cardinal Farrell concluded.
