LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Kevin Costner praised John Mulaney's effort as he delivered the speech to present the award for best sound to the movie ‘The Zone of Interest’.

Mulaney mentioned the story of Costner’s film ‘Field of Dreams’ during the 96th Academy Awards and also jokingly stated that the 1989 classic should have received the award for Best Picture in 2024.

John Mulaney funnily explains many movies including ‘Field of Dreams’

This came after Mulaney on Sunday, March 10, during the Oscar ceremony said, “Without sound, we wouldn't have been able to hear such classic lines as 'You're going to need a bigger boat,' 'I'll have what she's having,' and, 'He was in the Amazon with my mother when she was researching spiders just before she died,’” referring to films, like ‘Jaws’, ‘When Harry Met Sally’, and ‘Madame Web’.

The ‘John Mulaney: New in Town’ star then went on to explain, “Or what about that moment in Field of Dreams where we hear 'If you build it, he will come,' and then Costner does it, he builds a baseball field.”

He continued, “Or I guess he doesn't build it — he mows down corn, and then there is a field and he's like, 'I'm going to watch ghosts play baseball,' and the bank is like, 'You wanna pay your mortgage?' And he's like, 'Nah, I'm gonna watch ghosts play baseball.’”

Concluding his speech, Mulaney added, “I love Field of Dreams, that should win Best Picture — though they'll probably go with one of this year's.”

Internet says John Mulaney must host the Oscars next year

Meanwhile, several people online have reacted to Mulaney's speech with an X user tweeting, “John Mulaney said ‘I am going to write a presenting Oscar speech with a reference that is SO dated and esoteric…’ love him for that!!!!”

A person on YouTube wrote, “John Mulaney MUST host the Oscars next year! In one and a half minutes he got more laughs than Jimmy Kimmel did all night.”

Another one shared, “If John Mulaney's next special was purely dedicated to him recapping movies he's seen, I would gladly watch it.”

The third one said, “I would pay $50 to hear Mulaney summarize a movie rather than watch the movie itself.”

“Best part of the Oscar telecast? Comedian John Mulaney. I've seen him live and his over explanation of things in his act is always hilarious as it was last night. He gets my vote to make him the new host next year. Oh, and I almost forgot. Kudos, they remembered to honor the 50th anniversary of the streaker incident!” a user on Facebook added.
