'Not cool': Netflix faces backlash for canceling Michelle Yeoh-starrer 'The Brothers Sun' after Season 1
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Netflix has decided not to renew 'The Brothers Sun,' the comedy-drama series featuring Michelle Yeoh and co-created by Brad Falchuk of 'Glee' and 'American Horror Story,' alongside newcomer Byron Wu, for a second season.
The announcement came more than two months after the show's first season, which premiered on January 4 and consisted of eight episodes featuring Yeoh, Justin Chien, Sam Song Li, Joon Lee, and Highdee Kuan, per Deadline.
Netflix cancels 'The Brothers Sun' after Season 1
The movie, set in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California and focusing on Taiwanese organized crime, premiered on Netflix's global platform on January 4th.
Apart from Oscar winner Yeoh, the cast of 'The Brothers Sun' included Justin Chien, Sam Song Li, Highdee Kuan, and Joon Lee.
Critics lauded the drama 'Brothers Sun' for its stellar performances, particularly highlighting the work of Oscar winner Yeoh. Despite reaching No. 2 on the charts, the series remained in the Netflix Top 10 English-language series for five weeks. However, it struggled to draw a substantial viewership.
According to Deadline reports, 'Brothers Sun' fell short of Netflix's expectations. In its last two weeks in the Top 10, it garnered less than 2 million views per week, with an average of fewer than 7 million views per week overall.

Oscar winner Yeoh, 61, portrayed Eileen, the matriarch of a prominent Taiwanese crime family, whose assassin son Charles (Justin Chien) came back to Los Angeles to guard her and her son Bruce (Sam Song Lei), a medical student, following his father's death.
The television series was one of Yeoh's first significant endeavors after winning the 2023 Best Actress Oscar for her outstanding performance in 'Everything Everywhere All at Once,' per Daily Mail.
While Falchuk maintains an overarching contract with Netflix, sustaining his collaborative ties with the streaming platform, Yeoh intends to pursue her packed schedule post the show's conclusion.
Yeoh plays a significant part in the much-awaited 'Wicked' adaption this year, to name one notable accomplishment.
Internet slams Netflix for canceling 'The Brothers Sun'
Social media users took to X (formerly Twitter) to slam the international OTT platform for abruptly canceling the comedy-drama series, starring the Oscar-winning actress.
One disappointed online user wrote, "Not cool, I really enjoyed this show and the writing, Michelle Yeoh, was great. Really, really disappointed about this."
Another user claimed, "Netflix want to increase money," while one user chimed in, "Dang I just finished watching this today. Geez. They cancel everything my goodness."
Another one remarked, "Very disappointing! First, Disney+ cancelled 'American Born Chinese' last month and now this?! How do you cancel on Michelle Yeoh even if viewership wasn’t the highest?! Yes, S1’s finale neatly resolved a lot of plot, but left craving more, to see where S2 would take the series."
"Jesus christ, stop bringing your projects to Netflix. Need creative to start treating Netflix like the WB of streaming," exclaimed a disappointed user.

"If it has the words 'Netflix Original' in front of it, don't expect a second season," slammed another one.
One user allegedly claimed, "Most canceled netflix shows fall under the DEI umbrella. Cause these are shows that are greenlighted for agenda rather than the quality of work. You cant put the cart before the horse. People dont stick with shows cause of melanin."
Another user wrote, "Of course netflix has canceled the best thing that i have watched in 2024. no reason to be surprised. bunch of loons. the team behind the brothers sun deserve better."
