NYC Mayor Mamdani announces Knicks championship parade after team wins first NBA title in 53 years
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Saturday, June 13, that the city will host a ticker-tape parade and official celebration for the New York Knicks after they captured their first NBA championship in 53 years.
The announcement came moments after the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to secure the title. City officials said the parade will take place on Thursday, June 18, followed by a City Hall ceremony where members of the team will receive Keys to the City.
Mamdani announces parade, says it's time for NYC to 'celebrate together'
Shortly after the final buzzer, Mamdani confirmed the city’s plans for a championship celebration. “Parade. Thursday. Manhattan,” the mayor wrote on X.
In a subsequent statement, City Hall announced that New York will host what officials described as the first ticker-tape parade in the Knicks' history. The celebration will include a procession through Manhattan, a formal ceremony at City Hall, and the presentation of Keys to the City to players and team personnel.
“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment. Through near misses, heartbreak and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks,” Mamdani said in a statement. “And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart, just like the five boroughs itself.”
“New Yorkers have cheered for our team from packed living rooms in the Bronx to watch parties in Brooklyn, from bars in Queens to Staten Island to Manhattan, and Madison Square Garden itself. Now it’s time for our city to celebrate together,” he added.
Officials said additional details regarding parade routes, schedules, and media access will be released separately. City Hall also announced that municipal buildings across New York City will be illuminated in blue and orange on Thursday, June 18, in recognition of the championship victory.
Knicks end five-decade wait for NBA championship
The Knicks secured the NBA title by defeating the Spurs in five games, completing one of the franchise’s most memorable postseason runs. They overcame a 16-point deficit in Game 5 and outscored the Spurs in the fourth quarter behind another standout performance from Jalen Brunson.
Brunson scored 13 consecutive points during the final period and helped guide the Knicks to victory in a tightly contested finish.
“It’s everything I ever dreamed of,” Brunson said during the postgame celebration. “I don't know what I'm feeling. I'm in awe. Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it,” Brunson said.
The title ends a drought that stretched back to the championship-winning teams led by Walt Frazier and Willis Reed in the early 1970s. It also delivers the first major professional championship for the New York metropolitan area in one of North America’s four major sports leagues since the New York Giants’ Super Bowl victory following the 2011 season.
