WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Jamie Raskin criticized the US Supreme Court's decision to hear former President Donald Trump's presidential immunity claim aiming to evade prosecution in the election subversion case, which involves alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack during his presidency, reported The Hill.

In a conversation on MSNBC's 'Inside with Jen Psaki,' the Maryland lawmaker argued, "This was an obvious case not to take up, and just let the DC Circuit Court ruling stand."

"We don't have a king here. We had a revolution against a king, and the Constitution is written so that [the] President's main job is to take care [that] the laws are faithfully executed, not faithfully violated in his own interest," Raskin added.

On February 28, the SCOTUS announced its decision to hear Trump's immunity arguments during the week of April 22. This will delay the January 6 criminal trial, which is under the investigation of Department of Justice's special counsel Jack Smith.

The apex court decision came after two lower courts, including the DC Court of Appeals, denied the White House hopeful's claims. However, Trump continues to hold on to the argument that a president should have complete immunity to properly carry out the duties without fear of indictment by the opposition party when the term ends.

Rep Jamie Raskin blames Republican-nominated justices

The Democratic Congressman blamed the conservative justices of the Supreme Court, including the three nominated by Trump during his presidency, for the development.

"This is a court driven by the both Trump nominees and Bush nominees, and neither of those guys was elected with the popular vote," Raskin said.

"So we've got a Supreme Court that is representing the choices of minority presidents, and they have been driving very hard to overturn a whole series of precedents that America has come to take for granted, like Roe v. Wade," he continued.

The current US Supreme Court has a 6 to 3 conservative majority after Trump appointed Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin also denounced the SCOTUS move to hear the former president's arguments calling it a "disappointment."

In another recent development, as Trump closes in on the GOP presidential nomination, the Supreme Court announced that it would release a decision on Monday, March 4, which legal experts expect to be about the 14th Amendment case that kicked Trump off from the Colorado ballot.

Internet dubs Rep Jamie Raskin a 'liar'

Raskin faced intense online backlash for condemning the apex court move as netizens labeled him a "liar" and a "disgrace to the institution."

One user said, "Raskin is quite possibly the most obnoxious partisan politician in this country and has something to say about everything and is wrong all the time. Presidents do have immunity."

"Raskin is an example with what is all wrong with politicians. He could care less about the truth and will do and say anything for power. He’s a partisan hack. Disgrace to the institution," another person reacted.

A third user remarked, "Raskin is one of the worst liars in congress." A fourth response read, "Jamie Raskin is a crook."

"This guy is so easy to dislike," someone else opined.
