LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: OJ Simpson reportedly had just one "close family member" beside him when he died on April 10, 2024.

The news that the former NFL star, who died while battling prostate cancer, was surrounded by his family members is not true, according to his lawyer Malcolm LaVergne.

“You have to remember that they’ve shared OJ with the world their entire lives,” the attorney told AP, referencing Simpson's four surviving children.

“At first they shared good OJ. But still he was famous. And then, in 1994 on, they kind of had to share bad boy OJ with the world,” he said.

LaVerne continued, “But at the end of the day, these children just lost a father. And they have the added burden that he is one of the most famous people on the planet, and who is polarizing and who is surrounded by controversy.”

What did OJ Simpson's attorney say about his final days?

OJ Simpson was tried in double murder, where he was accused of killing ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. He came out clean in what was referred to as the ‘Trial of the Century’ in a 1995 sensational case.

Talking about Simpson's last days, the attorney shared, “He was awake, alert and chilling.”

“He’s on the couch … drinking a beer and watching TV. And so that was the last time we had effective back-and-forth conversations. He’s usually the one who keeps me up on the news … so we were just catching up on the news then,” the lawyer added.

LaVergne filed Simpson’s last will and testament and said, “Mr Simpson, to my understanding, had expressed his wishes to his children, the New York Post reported.

"And so they are going to act upon those wishes,” he added.

Simpson’s four children are the only beneficiaries of his estate in Nevada state court, per reports.

Internet weighs on whether OJ Simpson really died with one person beside him

Internet reacted to OJ Simpson’s lawyer's claims about him being with only one family member at the time of his death.

One social media user commented on the report, “His lawyer said he was one of the most famous people on the planet. One of the most infamous, perhaps , and not in a good way.”

Another wrote, "His only friend would be an attorney … who is paid by the hour to do so."

One speculated that OJ may have gotten away with the murder of his ex-wife and wrote, "And maybe, just maybe his second set of kids didn't want to be there after he killed their mom."

One user asked, "Have you ever been around someone who is dying? Nobody knows the timeline. It could be a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks."

"He was surrounded by his own malignant ego, as he always had been," one person said.
