WASHINGTON, DC: In the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has announced she will not step down from her position, as per The Hill.

The incident, which occurred at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has sparked a wave of criticism and calls for her resignation. The nation was left in shock when a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally on Saturday, grazing the former president’s ear, killing one rally attendee, and injuring two others.

The breach in security has led to intense scrutiny of the Secret Service's handling of the event, with many questioning how the assailant was able to get close enough to endanger Donald Trump.

Despite the tragic incident, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas expressed unwavering support for the Secret Service.

"I have 100 percent confidence in the Secret Service," he said. In response, Cheatle stated, "I appreciate the secretary’s comments. And we are going to continue to be transparent and communicate with people."

When pressed on whether she would resign following the incident, Cheatle was clear in her intentions. "I do plan to stay on," she told ABC News’s Pierre Thomas in an interview that aired Monday, July 15, on 'World News Tonight.'

Cheatle described her initial reaction to the shooting as one of "shock and concern" for Trump, calling the event "unacceptable" and asserting that it "should never happen again."

Cheatle emphasized her commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly. "The buck stops with me. I am the director of the Secret Service, and I need to make sure that we are performing a review and that we are giving resources to our personnel as necessary," she explained.

In response to the incident, President Joe Biden has called for an independent review of the security measures at the rally. Cheatle assured the public in a Monday statement that the Secret Service would "participate fully" in the review and work with Congress "on any oversight action."

Republican lawmakers have also vowed to conduct congressional investigations into the shooting. Cheatle is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee next week to discuss the incident and the security failures that allowed it to occur.

Another user added, "You had one job, and you blew it."

Other critics were even more direct, with one stating, "It shouldn't be up for her to decide. The president should fire her immediately!"

The sentiment was echoed by others, including a user who wrote, "She absolutely should step down. She’s a proven epic failure!"

Another added, "She literally failed at her job and led our generation to a once in 30-40 year historic occurrence. If she can’t accept responsibility, AND IS UNWILLING to make necessary changes, she should absolutely step down." [sic]

One user claimed, "Another typical DEI hire that simply can't do the job for which she was hired," while another wrote, "Of course the left never resigns because they are too egotistical. Nothing like an incompetent DEI hire." [sic]
