BELTON, MISSOURI: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, recently opened up about a terrifying experience they faced as parents when their young son, Patrick 'Bronze', had a severe allergic reaction, as reported by E! News.

The couple, who are vocal advocates for food allergy awareness, recalled the incident from August 2023 when they introduced nuts to their now 23-month-old son, only to have it end with an unexpected trip to the emergency room.

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes detail efforts to protect children from life-threatening reactions

This incident is particularly significant for the Mahomes family, given their 3-year-old daughter Sterling’s history of severe food allergies.

In an emotional video posted on Instagram, Brittany and Patrick detailed their efforts to raise awareness and protect their kids from potentially life-threatening reactions.

As Brittany explained, the Mahomes family has been mindful of food allergies since their daughter Sterling’s early experiences with reactions to peanuts, milk, and eggs.

With the arrival of Bronze, they aimed to carefully introduce new foods to check for any allergic responses, aware that Sterling’s allergies could potentially impact her younger brother as well.

During the incident in question, Brittany introduced nuts to Bronze using a packet of powder, which she carefully mixed into his bottle.

The reaction was swift and alarming. “He took his bottle and then within 30 or so minutes he became very irritable, very fussy,” Brittany shared in the video.

Initially, it seemed like mild discomfort, but things quickly escalated. Brittany was horrified to discover that Bronze’s body was suddenly covered in hives and welts.

“I took his diaper off and it was just hives and welts everywhere,” she recalled, clearly shaken by the memory.

Soon, the reaction spread to Bronze’s face, leaving Brittany deeply unsettled.

“That's when we rushed to the emergency room," she explained. For Brittany, seeing her young son’s face swollen and covered in welts was a nightmare.

“Just seeing his entire body covered in welts and hives and him being so uncomfortable was probably one of the scariest moments of my life,” she said, emphasizing how helpless she felt during the ordeal.

Bronze's allergic reaction has shaped Britanny and Patrick Mahomes’ parenting approach

Patrick Mahomes echoed his wife’s fear and anxiety during the emergency, describing it as a wake-up call for the seriousness of food allergies in their family.

Known for his calm and collected demeanor on the football field, Patrick admitted he was shaken by the incident, which highlighted how vulnerable their young son was to food allergies, a risk he hadn’t fully realized until this moment.

“Luckily for us, the doctors were able to help,” Patrick explained, visibly relieved. “And that’s when, to me, it became a serious thing that I needed to really pay attention to.”

For the couple, the experience underscored the importance of educating themselves and others about food allergies, especially when it comes to identifying symptoms that may appear suddenly or in unexpected ways.

This wasn’t the Mahomes’ first brush with food allergies, as they had already navigated similar concerns with their daughter Sterling.

Brittany, who is expecting her and Patrick’s third child, noted that their parenting approach has been profoundly shaped by this experience.

As a mother who has witnessed her children endure these reactions, Brittany felt compelled to share her story to raise awareness among other parents.

Brittany has since become an advocate for allergy awareness, regularly using her platform to inform others about the risks and realities of food allergies.

In January, she posted on Instagram about her journey with both Bronze and Sterling, sharing practical advice and encouraging others to be vigilant.

“I have an infant and a toddler, both who have severe food allergies, and I think it is very important to raise awareness of what a severe reaction may look like if it was to happen to a child,” Brittany stated in her January post.

“Based on my experience, I can tell you that a severe reaction may not look how you think it should look,” she said, describing how subtle signs can quickly develop into dangerous situations.

She added, "The safety of your child is of the utmost important thing when you're out and about."
