'Joker 2' trailer gives a glimpse of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga's world in Gotham

The trailer immerses the viewers into the world of the Clown Prince of Crime, Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, played by Phoenix. It shows that Joker has a new addition to the party in the second installment of 2019's critically acclaimed 'Joker'.

In the form of Gaga, the Joker now finally has the support of his better half Harley Quinn, who is going to set foot on the journey of crime with Fleck.

The trailer opens with Fleck caged in the Arkham asylum following the events of the first movie and gets approached by a band of police officers who seem to escort him to a place. On the way, his eyes meet Gaga's Quinn, striking music of love between the two.

As mentioned by Variety, they met unexpectedly in prison and fell deeply in love. In the trailer, the two can be seen plotting an escape from their cells to conquer the world together. Their journey takes them to the streets of Gotham, where they're seen in the trailer dancing and spinning with wild abandon.

While the trailer hints that their extravagant dance routines and surreal encounters might be pieces of their imagination, it succeeded in grabbing the attention of social media users.

In the first film, we saw the Joker's dark backstory as a struggling comedian and part-time clown. Now, in the sequel, he's hitting the road with Quinn, performing on various stages with her wearing his iconic makeup, as stated by Variety.

In a poignant moment from the trailer, the Joker declares, "I’ll tell you what’s changed. I’m not alone anymore, that’s what we should be talking about!" as Quinn embraces the madness alongside him.

The trailer closes with Quinn in Arkham Asylum, drawing a smiley face on the glass partition separating her from the Joker. She tells him, "I want to see the real you."

According to Variety, director Todd Phillips previously hinted that the film would be a musical, but clarified that while there will be plenty of song and dance numbers, it's not a strict musical in the traditional sense.
