'I can just go to jail': Pete Davidson recounts frustrating condition to scrub reckless driving charge
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY: Pete Davidson took an unconventional approach to have his reckless driving charge from 2023 dismissed, after finishing a diversion program ahead of schedule that included sentenced a safe driving course, and visits to a hospital and morgue to witness the impact of risky behavior.
During his stand-up performance on July 20, in Atlantic City, NJ, the comedian detailed the adittional unusual requirements set by the judge that he needed to fulfill in order to clear the incident from his record.
What street did Pete Davidson crash on?
On July 18, Judge Alexander CD Giza from Los Angeles County dismissed the misdemeanor charge related to an incident in March 2023, when Davidson crashed a Mercedes-Benz into in a residential area of Beverly Hills near the intersection of Rodeo Drive and Elevado Avenue as per Los Angeles Times.
During his July 20 performance, Davidson confessed he was frustrated by the requirement to visit a morgue and "look at a dead body that died from a reckless driving accident," and writing an essay on the experience.
The 30-year-old comedian, known for his roles on 'Saturday Night Live' and 'Bupkis', had been required to complete 50 hours of community service (which he fulfilled at a medical center where his sister, Casey Davidson, is employed), a safe driving course, and visits to a hospital and a morgue to address the serious repercussions of dangerous driving.
Davidson completed the 18-month program six months early of the deadline according to Rolling Stones.
Allegedly, he humorously told the audience, "Hooray? I guess. I did something bad. It's not really something to celebrate."
Davidson also shared that one of the more unusual requirements he faced was "visit both a hospital and morgue to confront the fatal consequences of risky choices" - a demand he found to be quite "f***ed up' from the judge.
"I was like, can I just go to jail for a day? It seems like six weeks of work," he told the crowd.
What was the cause of the Pete Davidson car crash?
Davidson was driving with his former girlfriend, Chase Sui Wonders, when he crashed his car into the side of a house in Beverly Hills' Flats neighborhood, according to first report by TMZ.
Authorities reported that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the incident.
Davidson's attorney, Mike Cavalluzzi, explained via phone that due to his client's residence in New York, Davidson substituted the Los Angeles County Hospitals and Morgue program with a Mothers Against Drunk Driving victim impact program.
Judge Giza stated, “The terms of diversion have been completed, so there’s successful diversion, so the matter is dismissed.”
The court had previously permitted Davidson to complete his community service with the New York City Fire Department.
Davidson’s father, a firefighter with Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn Heights, died during the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Davidson, a Staten Island native, explored his feelings about his father's death in the semi-autobiographical film 'The King of Staten Island'.
“We believe that Mr Davidson engaged in reckless driving, which ultimately resulted in his involvement in a serious collision into a home,” the DA’s office conveyed to Rolling Stone in a statement in 2023.
“Luckily, no one was seriously injured as a result of this collision. We know that reckless driving can have devastating consequences.”
