Prince Harry reveals awkward moment when Meghan Markle’s joke to Kate Middleton ended in ‘yawning silence’
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In Prince Harry’s memoir 'Spare', he revealed that Meghan Markle’s attempt at humor with Kate Middleton resulted in an awkward silence during her first Trooping the Colour in 2018.
This major royal event, known as the King’s Birthday Parade, is a highlight of the calendar, showcasing the House of Windsor’s elegance during a challenging year.
This year’s celebration saw King Charles, Kate Middleton, and other royals in attendance, but notably, the Sussexes were absent.
What happened during Meghan Markle's debut Trooping the Colour?
In 2018, Meghan made her balcony debut shortly after marrying Harry, which was marked by an awkward moment. After the flypast, Meghan tried to joke with Kate, but her attempt fell flat, resulting in an uncomfortable "yawning silence," according to Harry.
Harry wrote that after they stepped back inside, Kate asked Meghan what she thought of the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
Meghan replied, "Colourful."
While Meghan's answer to Kate was simply a lighthearted wisecrack, it didn't get a very positive reaction, which Harry described as "a yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole."
Despite her efforts at humor, Harry notes the atmosphere remained tense, reported Mirror.
In 'Spare', Harry discusses the tensions and fallout between Meghan and the royal family leading up to the wedding.
He suggested that Kate and William’s behavior may have contributed to the awkwardness at Trooping the Colour. He accused them of "stereotyping" Meghan and described several conflicts, such as a bridesmaid dress fitting argument and Kate’s reaction when Meghan asked to borrow lip gloss.
The relationship between the couples remains strained, with William and Kate not meeting Harry during his recent UK visit for the Invictus Games.
Following news of Kate’s health challenges, Harry and Meghan reportedly reached out privately to offer support and released a public statement expressing well-wishes and advocating for privacy during Kate’s cancer treatment.
“We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace,” they said.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reach Colombia
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have arrived in Colombia, marking their second official international trip of 2024 following their successful visit to Nigeria in May.
This tour comes at the invitation of Colombian Vice President Francia Marquez, who expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to showcase the country's vibrant culture and innovation.
In her statement, Marquez announced, "I am pleased to announce that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have kindly accepted my invitation to visit our beautiful country."
She continued, "During their stay, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will join me on visits to Bogota and to the Pacific and Caribbean regions, in Cartagena and Cali respectively. In these wonderful places they will have a unique opportunity to engage with leaders, young people and women, who embody the aspirations and voices of Colombians committed to progress."
Harry's security concerns in the UK have prevented him, Meghan, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, from returning to Britain.
The withdrawal of taxpayer-funded security has been a significant factor in their decision to stay abroad, leading to increased scrutiny of their international activities, including the Colombian tour.
