LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Princess Diana’s confidante Tina Brown thinks Prince William is surrounded by sycophants and needs his estranged younger brother Prince Harry to stay grounded.

While the 42-year-old Prince of Wales revealed his plans for his role in the monarchy - performing his duties with “a smaller 'r' in the royal” - they failed to impress Brown, who had a close relationship with the late Princess Diana and even had lunch with the former Princess of Wales before her tragic death in 1997.

Brown, who held the position of the editor in Vanity Fair for many years, recently revealed her take on the relationship dynamics between the two brothers.

Tina Brown says Prince William needs Prince Harry to stay grounded

Tina Brown, 70, recently expressed that Prince William’s comments made during his recent trip to South Africa for the Earthshot Prize, left her unimpressed.

The widow of the legendary newspaper editor, Sir Harold Evans, recently wrote in her Substack blog, Fresh Hell, “William did not help the mood by giving a swaggery interview at the end of his South Africa trip for the Earthshot Prize.”

Brown said she felt the Prince of Wales failed to show sufficient respect to his father, King Charles III. She also claimed that he is surrounded by sycophants, per Daily Mail

Brown continued, “He told reporters about his plans to 'do things differently' and then listed 'impact philanthropy, collaboration, convening and helping people'. In short, everything his father has been doing for the past 50 years…”

She further continued, “William's comment that his plans for a caring, sharing monarchy also include 'throwing some empathy in there' made him sound like a performative pinhead.”

Arguing that the Duke of Sussex could keep his elder brother grounded, Brown noted, “In happier years, it was the irreverent Harry (or Harold as William lugubriously used to call him) who could tease the Prince of Wales and take him down a peg.”

"There are too many people around William now who, in Kara Swisher’s inimitable phrase about those who live in a gilded bubble, “lick him up and down all day"," she added.

Brown’s recent post further highlighted why she thought Harry was necessary for the royal family during the changing world.

Making her case that while the senior members of the Firm are battling multiple health crises, the family needs the prodigal younger son.

She made her case, writing, “Enough with the feuds. Families, including this one, need to stick together. William, whatever his abiding resentments toward Harry for his intemperate broadsides in 'Spare', should now suck it up and let his father give Harry something to do.”

Brown, who is famous for her blunt comments, recently hit the headlines for calling Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s decision to quit royal duties in 2020 “a disaster".

She said, “The trouble with Meghan is that she has the worst judgment of anyone in the entire world. She's flawless about getting it all wrong.”

Royal family fans slam Tina Brown's take on Prince William and Harry

Tina Brown's analysis of the situation did not sit well with royal family fans who reminded the veteran journalist that it was Prince William who used to keep Harry grounded when they were on talking terms.

One of the readers commented online, "I thought it was the other way round William keeping Harry’s feet on the floor."

Someone else added, "What a bizarre and hilarious analysis! William seems a very down to earth loving father and husband. His work is authentic and focused on helping less fortunate."

"William was the one who kept Harry's feet on the ground. That is obvious to anyone looking at the airy-fairy ideas that the younger man has these days," noted the third.

The fourth user wrote, "I can't think of any situation where Harry's presence would be beneficial to anyone."

Someone else commented, "No matter what he does what he wears, some people will applaud, some will call for the end of the monarchy, and most won’t care."

Another fan of the elder prince chimed in, "Tina Brown, I don't think William has an ego problem or "swaggers" at all. He is trying to mould and define his role to make and keep it relevant in modern times and that is what he has to do."

Someone else noted, "We have William on one side who is focused on supporting and financing projects to improve the lives of many people and who can choose many homes, his usual home is a five-bedroom house, with reduced service. On the other hand, we have Harry, focused on making the press say what he wants said and who is angry with Pa because Pa doesn't force the press to be nicer to him. Who is the one who has his feet on the ground?"

"The last thing he need is to do is engage with Harry, Cannot be trusted and could well bring down the monarchy. Besides they have enough fires burning on the home front with Andrew’s complete lack of awareness," said another user.

Someone else added sarcastically, "Thanks. I needed the laugh. I’m certain the entire family is just lost without Harry to “ground” them."
