AUSTIN, TEXAS: Quentin Tarantino has sparked debate by labeling Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western drama series 'Yellowstone' as “a soap opera” during a recent appearance on the 'Joe Rogan Experience' podcast.

While the 'Kill Bill' and 'Pulp Fiction' director praised the show’s cinematic qualities and compelling performances, he ultimately dismissed it as lacking the depth and payoff of a well-crafted film, according to The Independent.

Quentin Tarantino’s take on modern television

Quentin Tarantino discussed the evolution of television and its growing adoption of cinematic storytelling.

Despite these advancements, the director maintains a critical stance on the medium.

“It’s still television to me,” Tarantino said, explaining that while shows may feel like films, they often lack the emotional climax and memorability of movies.

He used 'Yellowstone' as an example, sharing how he was initially captivated by its first season.

Kevin Costner is f**king wonderful in this,” he said, applauding the lead actor’s performance.

However, he felt the show fell into a repetitive cycle.

“At the end of the day, it’s just a soap opera," said the 61-year-old filmmaker.

"They introduce you to a bunch of characters… and everything else is just your connection to the soap opera,” he added.

Quentin Tarantino on difference between TV and movies

Quentin Tarantino elaborated on the differences between television and cinema, emphasizing that movies offer a definitive payoff that resonates with viewers long after the credits roll.

“I’ll see a good Western movie, and I’ll remember it the rest of my life,” he explained, contrasting this with TV shows like 'Yellowstone', which, he argued, focus on continuous drama without resolution.

While Tarantino is best known for his film work, he has dabbled in television, directing episodes of 'ER' and 'CSI'.

He has also written a TV series, 'Bounty Law', inspired by a fictional character from 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'.

However, the project’s production has been delayed, and its future remains uncertain.

Fans react to Quentin Tarantino’s 'Yellowstone' verdict

Quentin Tarantino’s comments have reignited discussions about the artistic value of modern television.

Fans of 'Yellowstone', which has enjoyed immense popularity and critical acclaim, may find his assessment divisive.

The show, led by Costner, has been praised for its rich storytelling and complex characters.

Reacting to Taranatino's opinion, one user on X wrote, "Maybe you just aren’t paying attention," and another tweeted, "Ok boomer," while someone remarked, "I think he’s just old and forgetful."

"A lot of movies are just as forgettable," a netizen commented, and an individual opined, "I thought it was great, until Kevin left."
