Red Sea in danger as Houthis strike Saudi oil facilities and US-Iran war spreads

As per the Houthis, the Saudi strikes on Hodeidah and Karaman Island followed recent attacks on commercial ships in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA: The Middle East conflict appears to be opening yet another front. Just days after tensions between the United States and Iran intensified, the Red Sea region has become the latest flashpoint, with Yemen's Houthi movement, on Saturday, July 25, claiming fresh missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure.

The exchange has renewed concerns that one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes could become the next major battlefield.

Houthis target Aramco facilities

The Iran-backed Houthis announced that they had launched a large-scale assault against Saudi oil facilities in Yanbu and Jizan, two key Red Sea cities that house major Aramco operations.

According to Houthi military spokesperson Brig Gen Yahya Saree, the attack involved a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.

"The operations successfully achieved their objectives, thanks be to God," Saree said. He also declared that what the Houthis described as a blockade against Saudi Arabia would continue.

"We confirm the blockade on the Saudi enemy is still ongoing in response to their aggression," he said.

The group's military wing later repeated that it had carried out what it called two "qualitative military operations" targeting sensitive Aramco facilities.

Houthis' attack follows Saudi air campaign

The latest barrage came less than a day after Saudi Arabia carried out airstrikes against Houthi-controlled positions in Yemen.

According to the Houthis, Friday's Saudi operation struck several locations, including Hodeidah and Karaman Island, prompting what they described as a retaliatory response.

The exchange follows recent Houthi attacks on commercial shipping moving through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a narrow waterway linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

The route is one of the world's most strategically important maritime corridors, carrying an estimated five percent of global seaborne trade.

Any sustained disruption could ripple across international shipping and energy markets.

Military analysts have reportedly said that the latest developments suggest the regional conflict is expanding beyond direct US-Iran hostilities.

Saudi authorities had not publicly confirmed damage or impacts at the reported sites at the time of reporting.

With commercial shipping already under threat in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the latest claims have placed additional focus on energy infrastructure, global trade routes and the possibility that the broader regional conflict could widen even further in the coming days.
