Richard Gere, 75, says he's ‘happier than ever’ after leaving US with Alejandra Silva and their children

MADRID, SPAIN: Richard Gere has embraced a new chapter of life at 75, relocating to Spain with his wife Alejandra Silva, 41, and their children.

The 75-year-old actor shared in an interview with Elle Espana that he has found profound happiness since the move.

Speaking about his life in Spain, Gere shared, “The truth is that you are seeing us in our momentum. We are happier than ever."

The couple’s household includes their sons Alexander, five, and James, four, as well as Silva’s son Albert, 11, from a previous relationship.

Gere noted that the move to Spain allowed Silva to reconnect with her Spanish heritage and family.

“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture,” he previously told Vanity Fair Spain.

“She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers,” he shared.

The actor expressed how their happiness is deeply intertwined.

“[Alejandra], because she is at home and I because, if she is happy, I am happy,” Gere explained.

Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva united by shared passions

Over the years, Alejandra Silva and Richard Gere, who tied the knot in April 2018, have collaborated on several projects, including the Sierra a Mar initiative in Mexico, according to People.

Gere reflected on the impact of their work, saying, “We can all minimize this sense of ego, of the self. And that’s when true change occurs.”

He also praised Silva’s character, describing her as someone who “shines for her open-mindedness and her genuine sense of gratitude.”

Silva shared her perspective with Elle Espana, calling their bond extraordinary. “We are like soul mates,” she said.

"This only happens once, if it happens at all. We were united by the karma of our past lives,” Silva shared.

Richard Gere's life away from the spotlight

Richard Gere’s career, which includes iconic roles in 'American Gigolo' (1980) and 'An Officer and a Gentleman' (1982), has shifted in recent years.

The actor has consciously stepped away from high-profile projects, choosing instead to focus on smaller, more personal endeavors.

“I made a subconscious choice to step back,” Gere revealed during an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.

Despite this retreat, he expressed pride in his previous acting decisions, saying, “I made some choices — not that I’m ashamed of it — but there were choices not to be in the big game. They were to be in a smaller game.”

Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva's decision to move was motivated by a desire to deepen their family’s cultural ties.

During a November 2024 appearance on 'The Today Show', Gere emphasized the importance of giving his children the opportunity to experience their mother’s heritage firsthand.



 

“The kids are bilingual, so it’s really going to be great for them,” he said.
