LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election against rival Kamala Harris, and since then people on the internet have come up with rumors claiming some celebrities are fleeing the country.

People on the internet first claimed that popular talk show host Ellen DeGeneres left the country with her wife Portia de Rossi as Trump won the election. However, the reasons have not yet been confirmed. Now, a new rumor has circulated on the internet claiming that actor Richard Gere is leaving the country and moving to Spain due to Trump's win. Is there any truth to this? Let's find out below.

Claim: Richard Gere leaving US after Trump's election win

Facebook account SpaceX Fanclub posted on November 26 and claimed, "Richard Gere followed Ellen and is moving to Spain! Hollywood Elites are hiding."

The rumor soon circulated on X and in different variations. The post claimed that Gere was following DeGeneres' steps in leaving the country after Trump's reelection.

Many people on Facebook tend to believe the rumor and commented on the post. A person commented, "What a really great idea and don’t come back," while one added, "Good for them. If they want to live differently than most Americans do, then they should go ahead and move. We have choices. Beauty of America."

A user also wrote, "Good let them all go they thought everyone cared about there political opinions guess what we didn’t," whereas one mentioned, "They can run and hide. But one day they will meet their real judge."

False: Facebook post contains satirical content

The claim that Richard Gere is leaving the US like Ellen DeGeneres after Trump's election win is false and unsubstantiated. The Facebook page SpaceX Fanclub that shared the post is known for posting satirical content, according to Snopes.

Moreover, Richard Gere has also not provided any confirmation regarding the rumor.

However, Gere has publicly discussed his family's move to Spain. Gere's wife, Alejandra Silva, is from Spain and Gere said the move is "for her family, her friends, her culture."

Moreover, Gere has publicly confirmed that he and his family would be moving to Spain, but he did not say that they were moving because of Trump's reelection, per the outlet.

Celebs who claimed to leave the US if Trump won

Before Trump's January inauguration, many celebrities had expressed their wish to leave the US for a new life overseas, with many revealing their intentions long before the election, as quoted in a report by Market Watch.

Actress Sharon Stone is one such celeb. She is not the only celebrity who revealed her intention to leave the country before the election even happened. She had planned to relocate to Canada with her whole family if a Republican was nominated in this election.
