Richard Gere jokes he can 'retire now' as son Homer's career soars after 'Euphoria'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actor Richard Gere reflected on his son Homer Gere’s growing acting career during an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, expressing pride as the 26-year-old continues to establish himself in Hollywood.
Gere also discussed Homer's recent projects and the qualities he believes are helping him navigate the industry, while reflecting on his own decades-long journey in entertainment and his upcoming return to the series 'The Agency.'
Richard Gere on Homer Gere’s growing success in Hollywood
Gere lauded Homer, saying he is proud of the way he has approached acting and the opportunities coming his way. “He’s really good. I’m proud of him on many levels,” Gere said, adding, “He’s got a great head on his shoulders."
He further said, "He understands this industry. It’s not easy to navigate, and he’s doing a good job.” Homer, whom he shares with ex-wife Carey Lowell, recently appeared in two episodes of HBO’s 'Euphoria' as Dylan Reid, including a scene opposite actress Sydney Sweeney.
He is also set to star alongside actress Kaia Gerber in writer and director Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series 'The Shards,' based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel. He also revealed that his son has just finished working on a film directed by Oliver Stone.
Reflecting on Homer’s recent accomplishments, he joked that his son’s success means his own work may soon be done. “He’s got Euphoria, he’s got The Shards, he just finished an Oliver Stone movie. I can retire now. It’s passing the torch,” he said.
At the same time, the actor made clear that he does not see acting as something he must pursue forever. “I don’t think he has to commit to acting,” he said, adding, “He’s good at it. He’s enjoying it. But if he wants to do something else, he should do something else.”
Richard Gere reflects on his own career and return to 'The Agency'
While discussing his son’s future, Gere also looked back on his own path to becoming an actor. Before finding success in Hollywood, he worked in theater and music, eventually realizing that acting combined many of the interests that mattered most to him.
“I was a theater actor in the late ’60s and early ’70s. I was also a musician. I was doing studio work. But acting became the thing that allowed me to explore psychology, philosophy, music, art — all of it,” he explained.
He continued, “It’s a way of understanding what it means to be human.” Gere is now preparing to return as CIA London station chief James Bradley in Season 2 of 'The Agency,' the espionage drama starring Michael Fassbender.
Discussing the themes of the series, Gere drew parallels between acting and undercover intelligence work. “Undercover work is acting,” he said, adding, “We all have masks. We all play different roles depending on who we're talking to, who we're interacting with.”
The actor, who has long practiced Buddhism, said the show raises deeper questions about identity and authenticity: “Who are we underneath all of that? Where is the true self? As a Buddhist, I think that's always the challenge — to stay connected to that deeper self while navigating all these different masks we wear.”
