Rita Wilson makes blunt request to Tom Hanks after cancer diagnosis: ‘Be sad for a long time’
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actress Rita Wilson recently shared a deeply personal reflection about her cancer journey and the emotional conversations she had with her husband, Tom Hanks, following her diagnosis in 2015.
Speaking at the 'Sound of a Woman: Rita Wilson in Conversation with Demi Moore' event on Tuesday, April 28, she revisited how illness reshaped her outlook on life and creativity. She also discussed her recovery, her music inspired by the experience, and her long-standing wish to balance grief with celebration.
Rita Wilson shares cancer journey and blunt message to Tom Hanks
At the event held ahead of her upcoming album 'Wilson', she spoke about her breast cancer diagnosis and the emotional message she shared with Hanks. She revealed she told him she wanted him to be “sad for a very long time” if she passed away, but also to celebrate her life with joy and storytelling.
Wilson underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in 2015 after invasive cancer was discovered. She previously said she had been living with LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ), which was monitored through yearly mammograms and breast MRIs.
After surgical biopsies, PLCIS (pleomorphic carcinoma in situ) was detected, followed by a second opinion that revealed invasive lobular carcinoma, later confirmed by another pathologist. She emphasized that second opinions are critical, stating that early diagnosis can change outcomes.
She also shared that her 2019 song 'Throw Me a Party', written with Liz Rose and Kristian Bush, came from this experience and reflected her thoughts during diagnosis, when she feared mortality and uncertainty.
In a 2019 Instagram post, she reiterated, “Four years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had so many different thoughts. You’re scared, anxious, you think about your own mortality. So I had a serious discussion with my husband that if anything happens, I wanted him to be super sad for a very long time and I’d also like a party, a celebration.”
She said, “I'm so thankful to my doctors, to my friends, to my family. The gratitude is overwhelming. It didn’t always feel this way. And you know that, anybody who's going through it or who's survived knows that it's an up and down, like a hamster wheel. But then you get to this point.”
Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks marriage reflects enduring bond and family life
Rita has described her recovery as an emotional “up and down hamster wheel” and said she does not often speak about it, but believes good news should be celebrated.
Hanks and Wilson married in 1988 after first meeting on the set of 'Bosom Buddies' in 1981, initially becoming friends before beginning a relationship. They made their red carpet debut in 1986 and share two sons, Chester “Chet” Hanks, and Truman Theodore Hanks.
In a 2001 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Hanks described their marriage, “The success of our relationship was a matter of timing, maturity and our willingness to have an intimate connection."
He added, “When I married Rita, I thought, ‘This is going to require some change on my part.’ I won't deny that providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn't magic — the way it's shown in movies.”
Hanks further said, “In real life, our connection is as concrete as me sitting here. Not that marriage doesn't come close to being hell in a handbasket sometimes. But we both know that no matter what, we'll be with each other — and we'll get through it.”
Over the years, both have frequently shared public tributes. Wilson once called Hanks her “best friend” in a 2023 birthday post, while Hanks has referred to her as “beloved,” often celebrating her life and presence in heartfelt messages.
