WASHINGTON, DC: Robert F Kennedy Jr, an independent presidential candidate, has been vigorously pursuing a spot in the first debate alongside President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

With the debate scheduled for June 27, Kennedy faces significant challenges to meet the qualifying criteria, sparking a firestorm of reactions across social media platforms, as reported by The Hill.

Robert F Kennedy Jr's multi-pronged efforts to secure debate spot

Kennedy has launched a legal offensive against the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and the campaigns of Biden and Trump, aiming to challenge the rules that he claims unfairly restrict his participation.

On Wednesday, May 29, Kennedy filed a complaint asserting that the debate criteria set by CNN violate FEC laws, arguing that the requirements represent an undue corporate contribution to Biden and Trump's campaigns.

"By demanding our campaign meet different criteria to participate in the debate than Presidents Biden and Trump, CNN’s debate violates FEC law and is a large prohibited corporate contribution to both the Biden and Trump campaigns," Kennedy stated.

Lorenzo Holloway, an attorney representing Kennedy's campaign, accused CNN of colluding with the Biden and Trump campaigns to exclude Kennedy.

"The violations occurred when, based on the available evidence, CNN colluded with the Biden committee and the Trump committee to schedule and did schedule a debate with criteria that were designed to result in the selection of certain pre-chosen participants, namely Biden and Trump," Holloway argued.

In parallel to his legal tactics, Kennedy is vigorously working on his ballot access campaign. Since becoming an independent candidate in October 2023, he has been collecting petitions across the United States to ensure his name appears on the general election ballot.

This week, Kennedy added New York to a list of 16 states where he claims to have met or exceeded the required number of petitions, including key battlegrounds like Michigan and Nevada. Texas and California have already confirmed his ballot status.

According to The Hill and Decision Desk HQ, which track Kennedy’s ballot access progress, four states have confirmed his ballot status. However, securing ballot access is only part of the challenge; Kennedy must also meet stringent polling criteria set by CNN.

CNN has established that to qualify for the debate, candidates must receive 15 percent support in four national polls and be declared candidates in enough states to amass 270 electoral votes, the minimum required to win the presidency. Kennedy has so far met the polling threshold in three out of the four necessary surveys.

Robert F Kennedy Jr's quest to join debate stage sparks debate

Kennedy’s efforts to join the debate stage sparked a heated discussion online. One user on Facebook commented, "He belongs in a loony bin," while another said, "He’s a joke! Even his own family’s embarrassed by him. R’s and D’s alike laugh at him!"

A third user wrote, "He doesn’t deserve to be there! He’s a clown." Someone else mentioned, "RFK Jr was done after he admitted worms ate part of his brain."

Others, however, expressed support for Kennedy. A user wrote, "The American people have the right to hear from all leading presidential candidates. Not just the hand-picked duopoly candidates." Another added, "The duopoly has given you two of the worst candidates in history. They're not going to let an outsider in to expose that."

A user noted, "Even with his worm-eaten brain, RFK Jr. is still 'more with it' than brain-dead Biden," while another commented, "None of the two have the capacity to debate with Kennedy."
