Robert Pattinson reveals he almost quit acting 'worrying' amid Covid-19 and Hollywood strikes
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Robert Pattinson recently opened up on his near-decision to step away from his acting career.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actor candidly shared how the Covid-19 pandemic and Hollywood’s actors and writers strikes profoundly affected his perspective on the industry.
Robert Pattinson recalls times when he believed 'cinema is dying'
Speaking about the time of Covid-19 and Hollywood strikes, Pattinson revealed, “The last few years for the film industry, starting with Covid-19 and then the strikes, everyone was constantly saying cinema is dying. And quite convincingly.”
“I was literally almost turned off. It actually started to get a little worrying,” he shared.
During this turbulent period, Pattinson observed a decline in originality, describing many films as feeling “very studio” and uninspired.
“Every actor for two years was saying, ‘What is happening? Nothing’s cool,’” he recalled.
These concerns echoed across the industry, leaving many questioning the future of cinema.
However, Pattinson acknowledged a recent resurgence of creativity, noting a “flurry of very ambitious movies” that have reinvigorated his passion.
“I feel like the stuff that’s going to get nominated for Oscars this year is going to be really interesting,” he said.
“And it seems like there’s suddenly a new batch of directors who the audience is excited about as well,” he shared.
Robert Pattinson praises innovative filmmaking
Among the projects that reignited his excitement for the industry, Robert Pattinson cited several standout films.
“I saw this Norwegian movie 'Armand', which I thought was amazing. My friend Brady Corbet’s movie 'The Brutalist',” he shared.
These films, he noted, exemplify the kind of bold storytelling he finds inspiring.
Pattinson hopes that his own forthcoming sci-fi film 'Mickey 17' will contribute to this creative momentum.
“I’m hopeful it will come out in a period of enthusiasm for cinema,” he said.
“I don’t know what was going on really, what happened in the Saturn return or whatever it is, but now there’s really cool parts everywhere,” Pattinson added.
Robert Pattinson's career of surprises
Reflecting on his career, Robert Pattinson expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has had but admitted that he never expected such longevity.
“I didn’t in a million years think I’d still be doing this when I got my first job,” he told The New York Times Style Magazine.
The actor gained early recognition for his role in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' in 2005 and went on to achieve global fame through the 'Twilight' series.
Despite his success, Pattinson has hinted at the possibility of stepping back from acting after completing Matt Reeves’ DC Comics trilogy.
“I could genuinely be retiring by the end of it,” he said.
For now, Pattinson is focusing on the bright spots in the industry.
“There’s a renewed energy,” he said, emphasizing his excitement for the next chapter in filmmaking.
“It’s exciting to be part of it again," he shared.
