Ron Howard reveals one thing that can compel him to 'hold' his directing role and show up as actor

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Ron Howard has spent most of his Hollywood career behind the camera, but there is one person who could again bring him back in front of it.

The actor-turned-director, 71, says he enjoys acting but remains focused on directing.

Bryce Dallas Howard could convince Ron Howard to act again

Ron Howard, who is an executive producer for the Apple TV+ docuseries 'Fight for Glory: 2024 World Series', says he had fun playing himself in an episode of 'The Studio' but finds it difficult to make time for acting.

Howard says that if his daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, were to cast him in a project, he would step away from his directing duties to take the role.

"I think that if my daughter Bryce cast me in something, that would compel me to put down the directing obligation, put them on hold for a minute and show up,” Howard told People, referring to his 44-year-old actor/director daughter.

Otherwise, Howard is committed to his work, "I keep my calendar full in ways that are exciting and I want to succeed at. I want to focus,” Howard said.

Since leaving 'Happy Days' in 1984, Howard has limited his on-screen appearances to voice roles, uncredited cameos, and playing himself.

Ron Howard calls working behind the camera a 'fascinating way of life'

Ron Howard said directing has been deeply fulfilling and such a  "fascinating way of life."

The Oscar-winning 'A Beautiful Mind' director has expanded his work to include documentaries alongside scripted films from last decade.



 

"I’ve begun working on documentaries as well as scripted films, and I really love both,” he said.

He continued, “I think both disciplines are kind of informing each other in interesting ways, and it's stimulating some growth for me creatively, which is exciting at this point in my life."

Ron Howard compares filmmaking to baseball, saying 'nobody bats a thousand'

Howard believes filmmaking is a craft that cannot be mastered completely.

"There are so many stories and ideas, a taste shift, a sensibility shift, and that puts different kinds of focus on storylines and styles of storytelling in cinema,” he adds.

But according to Howard, “It’s the medium that can’t be mastered." He says, it is "A little bit like baseball, nobody bats a thousand."

He acknowledges the challenges that come with storytelling. “You have to recognize that about filmmaking: You give it the medium and the audience and everything you’ve got, and then try to look for the next great story."
