MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA: A Pennsylvania judge found a mother guilty of killing her 11-year-old son on Thursday, February 15, despite the mother's mental health defense not being accepted.

On April 10, 2023, Ruth DiRienzo-Whitehead, 51, used a belt to strangle young Matthew Whitehead at their Horsham Township home.

After killing her 11-year-old, Ruth drove her Toyota Highlander SUV about 120 miles south to Cape May, New Jersey, and drove right into the ocean off Beach Avenue. After the vehicle, the vehicle could no longer be driven she walked to Wildwood Crest where she was taken into custody.

Ruth said she strangled her son to death because she didn't want Matthew to have financial difficulties growing up.

According to WCAU, her defense contended that she had gone through a psychotic break as a result of financial difficulties, menopause, and caring for her elderly mother who had dementia.

The state did, however, point out searches she did on Google in the days and even weeks preceding the incident; among other things, she looked up mental illnesses that led mothers to kill their children and how to strangle someone.

The prosecution contended that her motivation was to exact revenge on her spouse. Authorities claimed she complained that he was not providing her with the life she had "signed up for," as reported by WCAU.

Matthew Whitehead's father called 911 after finding son dead

Daniel Whitehead, Matthew's father, found his son dead. He testified at trial, saying, "I saw him laying on the bed face down," according to The Delco Daily Times. “I screamed.”

He referred to Dirienzo-Whitehead as "the defendant" rather than by name at any point. According to reports, Daniel Whitehead testified that it was not unusual for him to sleep in his son's room while Matthew and Dirienzo-Whitehead were in the master bedroom.

When he awoke on April 11th, his wife's SUV was gone and the master bedroom was locked. Using a screwdriver to open the door, he discovered his son dead and immediately dialed 911.

“Today, we got justice for a beautiful little boy who should have never been in a position to need justice,” prosecutor Lauren Marvel said.

Daniel Whitehead reportedly testified, "He was a great boy. He was always happy.” Friday is scheduled for sentencing. DiRienzo-Whitehead is expected to serve a mandatory life term.
