Pilot reported engine trouble moments before crash into trailer park
The pilot of the ill-fated Beechcraft alerted air traffic control of engine failure at approximately 7.08 pm on Thursday, just minutes before the plane went down into the mobile home park.
The single-engine aircraft was carrying an unspecified number of people when it began experiencing mechanical issues. Despite the pilot’s distress call, the aircraft was unable to reach a safe landing zone before crashing into the residential area in Clearwater.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be investigating the lead-up to the crash as part of determining its official cause.
Crashed plane ignited a massive fire engulfing several other residences
The plane crashed into one of the mobile homes, instantly igniting a massive fire upon impact, according to Clearwater Fire Chief Scott Ehlers. The ensuing wreckage, explosions, and flames engulfed several other residences in the living community.
Video footage from the chaotic scene shows debris from the disintegrated aircraft, adjacent to the burnt remnants of trees and homes. The extreme heat and intensity of the fires took firefighters time to fully extinguish the blaze.
In addition to the unnamed victims who were passengers of the plane, residents within the impacted mobile homes also lost their lives. "There were several fatalities, both from the aircraft and within the mobile home," stated Chief Ehlers during a news briefing.
