LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The View' co-host Sara Haines has taken Selena Gomez’s side after she faced a lot of slamming from conservative media pundits for posting a now-deleted video where she was seen breaking down in tears while talking about Donald Trump administration’s immigration policy.

‘The View’ discussed it on the Tuesday, January 28, episode while showing clips of the criticism Gomez received.

The 32-year-old actress was asked to “check her compassionate privilege” by ‘The Five’ host Dana Perino while Sean Hannity called her crying a “performative fit of hysteria", as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Selena Gomez faces backlash over emotional video on immigration crackdown

After Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement that it had made 956 arrests as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants, Selena Gomez posted an Instagram video where she discussed the situation while crying.

She was visibly distraught. Wiping away tears, she said in the since-deleted video, “I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” The video was captioned, “I’m sorry”, next to a Mexican flag emoji, per The New York Times.

The 'Only Murders in the Building' actress has since deleted the original post, but its short run online created quite a stir with numerous political commentators weighing in.

Gomez, who has Mexican heritage, was even mocked by Trump's “border czar” Tom Homan, who asked where her tears are for the thousands of Americans who have died from fentanyl coming across the southern border, per Fox News.

Later, the ‘Emilia Perez' star shared a now-disappeared Instagram Story, writing, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.”

On 'The View', when Whoopi Goldberg asked other co-hosts if America “has a problem finding empathy", Sara Haines said, “The only thing that could fix so much of the division in this country is empathy, is compassion, and there’s no privilege to that.”

She continued, “Watching Selena Gomez… What people don’t understand is that two things can be true at once. All of the conservative media pundits answered with, ‘What about the violent criminals?’ Selena Gomez can feel compassion for people being deported, she has a very personal connection to that.”

The 47-year-old journalist noted Gomez’s “personal connection” to the mass deportations as her relatives crossed the border before working hard and getting American citizenship.

"Her grandmother came in the back of a truck across the border and her father was then born in the country. That is natural to then say, 'God, it's heartbreaking to watch this'. It can be heartbreaking and she can still not be okay with violent criminals,” Haines explained.

Sara Haines asks for more transparency from Donald Trump’s administration

Sara Haines sought for more transparency from the government, which she had also mentioned during the Monday episode on 'The View'.

She said, “If they broke down every person deported and said, ‘We’ve got 16 murderers, 15 rapists, 13 repeat offenders,’ everyone in this country, including Selena Gomez, would say bravo!”

“But that’s not what’s happening, and they’re not being open about it. So never condemn someone for showing empathy for another person,” Haines added.
