Selena Gomez shuts down body shamers amid claims she was ‘hiding’ her stomach at red carpet event
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Selena Gomez has spoken out against body-shaming following negative comments about her appearance at the premiere of her new Netflix film, 'Emilia Perez'.
Gomez's film premiered at the American French Film Festival in Los Angeles. The singer-actress was seen posing on the red carpet, occasionally placing her hands in front of her stomach.
After the event, some social media users targeted her over her appearance and accused her of "hiding" her stomach. This led her to respond to the cruel comments.
Selena Gomez highlights ongoing battle with SIBO
Selena Gomez mentioned her ongoing battle with an intestinal condition known as SIBO while addressing criticism over her appearance at the Los Angeles event.
The 32-year-old star of 'Only Murders in the Building' was photographed on Tuesday, October 29, at the DGA Theater Complex in Los Angeles, attending the premiere of her new film 'Emilia Perez' at the American French Film Festival, Daily Mail reported.
Gomez responded to a series of comments on a now-removed TikTok video where social media users trolled her over her appearance at the event.
"This makes me sick," Gomez commented on TikTok. "I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up."
She went on to say, "I don't care that I don't look like a stick figure. I don't have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I'm just human."
Gomez, who portrays Jessi in 'Emilia Perez' alongside Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon, mentioned that her weight fluctuates due to her health challenges with lupus and other conditions.
The renowned singer attended the screening wearing a black split-leg gown crafted from ruched fabric, posing with her arm around her lower stomach in several photographs from the event. This led to various speculations among fans about her weight, with many claiming "she was hiding her body in some way," according to Elle.
SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, occurs when "the passage of food and waste products in the digestive tract" slows, "creating a breeding ground for bacteria".
Symptoms include bloating, stomach pain, and malnutrition. Gomez has consistently been transparent about her health challenges, including her diagnosis of lupus and the kidney transplant she underwent in 2017.
