Selena Gomez's awkward exchange with 'Emilia Perez' co-star Karla Sofia Gascon at Oscars 2025 goes viral

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Selena Gomez reunited with her controversial ‘Emilia Perez’ co-star Karla Sofia Gascon during the Oscars 2025, but fans were not pleased with the exchange. 

As the Oscars 2025 unfolded, several moments from the award ceremony stood out. One among them was an awkward exchange between the ‘Emilia Perez’ costars Gomez and Gascon, per Daily Mail.

The meeting between the two co-stars took place just a few weeks after the 52-year-old Spanish-born actress made headlines for her controversial social media posts that resurfaced in late January.

Karla Sofia Gascon created history during the Oscars 2025 after being nominated for the Best Actress Award for her performance in ‘Emilia Perez’ as a cartel chief pretending to die to subsequently transition into a woman. 

While the actress created history by being the first trans woman to gain the nod, her Oscar race was soon marred with controversy when several of her past controversial tweets resurfaced. Gascon faced backlash after she criticized Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the 2021 Oscars, in her past tweets, and also allegedly called Gomez a "rich rat."

The actress, who largely skipped the award circuit during the season, also did not walk the red carpet ahead of the 97th Academy Awards. Nevertheless, she attended the main ceremony where she met with her co-star and Rare Beauty founder. 

While the two actresses were seated in adjacent rows in the audience, they stood up at one instance to greet each other. Their meeting transitioned into an awkward exchange after they leaned toward each other to give a peck on the cheek over the chairs. 

Their brief exchange soon caught the attention of the internet, which quickly turned it into a joke. 

A fan shared a snap of the moment online while joking that Gascon was probably whispering, “The bomb will set off in 45 minutes. Leave the venue in a few.”

Soon, the post took off on the internet and since then has accumulated over 1.3 million views and 39K likes. 

Though the tweet went viral with several fans poking fun at the exchange, a section of Selena Gomez's fans were left fuming. 

They called out their idol for conversing with Gascon as the Spanish-born actress has previously “dissed” the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ actress. 

In a resurfaced tweet from 2022, ‘We Are the Nobles’ actress took a dig at Gomez’s equation with her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey, writing, “She's a rich rat who plays the poor b*****d whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife.”

After Gascon’s nomination was announced last month, writer Sarah Hagi further unearthed several of the actress’s social media posts that took the internet by storm. 

She took a swipe at Islam in one of her posts in September 2020, writing, “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo,” before adding, “Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY," as reported by Daily Mail.

She further continued her tirade against the religion in another post dated November 2020, where she wrote, “I'm sorry. Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we'll have to teach Arabic.”

Gascon further sparked controversy when her tweet regarding the Black Lives Matter riot resurfaced. 

Referencing George Floyd’s death, she wrote, “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They are both wrong.”

The internet was left in a split after the exchange between Selena Gomez and Karla Sofia Gascon went viral online, with several netizens comparing it with a scene from a thriller flick. 

One of the social media users noted, "This looks like a scene straight out of a spy movie."

Someone else added, "Why does this feel like a secret mission briefing at the Oscars?"

"There's always a big bang on Oscar night, but this one looks a little different," noted another amused social media user. 

Someone else mused, "She actually rehearsed for this? was it funny or thrilling in her mind?😭😭."

"Did she rehearse this😅," asked another fan, before pointing out, "This is so unserious🤣🤣, looks like a bts scene straight out of a spy movie...."

While a section of the fans quipped at the awkwardness of the scene, someone else praised Gomez for her mature handling of the moment, writing, "Selana just being casual and mature."

However, everyone was not of the same opinion, as another fan noted, "Why is selena kissing her ughhhhh, every time i start liking her she does something like this."

"Nobody In Hollywood has morals … she literally dissed you and you showing love to her cause y’all in a movie ? Her career is over," added another enraged fan.
