LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Late-night talk show host Seth Meyers recently shared a heartwarming and hilarious story about his encounter with the legendary comedian Don Rickles.
In a clip posted online, Meyers recounted a memorable interaction with Rickles at a Vanity Fair Oscars party, where he had the pleasure of engaging in conversation with the iconic humorist.
Seth Meyers' memorable encounter at the Vanity Fair Oscars party
Meyers kicked off the story by setting the scene at the glamorous Vanity Fair Oscars party, describing how Rickles, amid the Black Tie affair, appeared a bit fatigued, having even untied his bow tie.
'It was at a Vanity Fair Oscars party, and he was sitting at a table, you know, uh, Black Tie, but he untied his bow tie and he just looked very tired."
Meyers, then a part of the 'Saturday Night Live' (SNL) team, decided to seize the opportunity and introduce himself to the comedy legend.
Approaching Rickles, Meyers introduced himself, explaining his association with SNL.
To his surprise, Rickles responded with a touch of humor and an unexpected comment, seemingly unaware that SNL hadn't been canceled.
"My name is Seth Myers, I work on SNL," and he's like, "Oh," and he puts a hand on my shoulder, and again I thought he was like out of it. I thought like, 'Look at this old...' He puts a hand; I just want to say, 'I'm so, I'm so sorry to hear what happened with Saturday Night Live. I'm so sorry it got canceled,' and I go, 'Oh, it didn't. It didn't get canceled,'
Rickles quipped, "A guy can dream," a moment that showcased Rickles' wit and ability to effortlessly land a punchline even when seemingly tired.

Reveling in Don Rickles' unmatched wit over dinner
Meyers further shared another instance when he had dinner with an older Rickles, where the comedian stood up and humorously bantered with everyone at the table, leaving Meyers in awe of Rickles' comedic genius.
Despite Rickles' playful roasting of everyone present, there was an underlying sense of genuine affection and warmth, emphasizing Rickles' knack for making people laugh while displaying a deep fondness for them.
"Yeah, I went to dinner with a very old Don Rickles too, same thing. He stands up and he starts to obliterate everybody at the table, and I never heard anything so funny. It's the best crazy."
Reflecting on Rickles' personality, Meyers highlighted the essence of Rickles' charm, the belief that he genuinely cared for everyone around him.
This authenticity allowed Rickles to get away with humorous jabs and playful ribbing, as those around him knew it came from a place of love and good-natured humor.
