'Shame on you': Outrage as Biden campaign labels abortion restriction talk 'Republican trap'
WASHINGTON, DC: As Joe Biden made two campaign stops in Florida on Tuesday, April 23, the President's re-election campaign said that asking him if he supports any limitations on abortion is falling into a Republican 'trap', according to the New York Post.
Notably, after the Supreme Court reversed Roe v Wade in June 2022, Biden, who is the second-ever Roman Catholic president of the United States, has urged citizens to elect Democrats to the House and Senate to legislate the right to an abortion nationally.
Biden campaign states talking about abortion restrictions is a Republican ‘trap’
A reporter questioned the Biden campaign officials about a cutoff point for his support of abortion during a press call. The reporter asked, "Is it still fetal viability [typically 24 weeks]?"
A spokesperson answered, "The president believes that we should restore the protections of Roe, he’s been pretty clear, pretty consistent in that. So we aren’t going to fall on any traps that Republicans may want to lay because that’s so far from reality."
Notably, Biden has previously stated that he is in favor of certain restrictions on the controversial practice. A reporter questioned him in October 2022 about whether there need to be 'any restrictions on abortion at all.' Biden reverted, "Yes, there should be" adding, "Roe v Wade, read it, man. You’ll get educated."
Notably, many state laws that formerly forbade abortion were overturned by Roe v Wade, which held that the operation could not be outlawed before fetal viability, or about 24 weeks into pregnancy.
The decision did let states start enforcing restrictions in the second trimester and completely ban abortion in the third.
Moreover, Some states have reinstated earlier guidelines that further limit the process after the Supreme Court reversed the Roe decision.
Notably, in an attempt to elevate abortion to a major issue, the Biden campaign has emphasized that three conservative justices were nominated to the court by Donald Trump.
Internet slams Biden's campaign for their statement
Many internet users took jibes at the Biden campaign as they said that asking President Biden if he supports any limitations on abortion is falling into a Republican 'trap'.
A user wrote on X, "Well he doesn’t know how government works. DeSantis is the elected governor. He is doing what the people of Florida want. Trump did nothing," while one added, "President Biden barely knows what day it is. Shame on you Democrats wheeling around a senile old man as a front for whoever you've actually got running the show. Find some decency."
