LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Kirsten Dunst sparked debate and discussion among the fans of the ‘Spider-Man’ series after she questioned whether a fourth installment in the original series is even needed.

Dunst played Mary Jane Watson, popularly known as MJ, in the web-slinging superhero film series from 2002 to 2007, along with Tobey Maguire who played the titular Peter Parker.

Dunst, 41, who played MJ in the original trilogy, recently questioned the necessity of making ‘Spider-Man 4’.

Kirsten Dunst opens up about ‘Spider-Man 4’

During a recent interview with IndieWire, the actress who is currently promoting Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’, appeared divided over the necessity of the fourth installment.

As the interviewer asked the ‘Little Women’ actress whether she wanted to do another ‘Spider-Man’ movie, she replied that she “can’t tell,” before adding, “It would depend.”

While she did not give a definitive answer regarding her desire to appear in another ‘Spider-Man’ movie, she poignantly threw the question, “Honestly, do we need it?”

However, she implied further that a good ‘script’ might entice her to take up the role.

When prodded further, Dunst replied, “It would really depend on the script, and also, I don’t know, you’re really putting yourself out there in a way that … let’s maybe leave things when they were good. You know what I mean?”

Nevertheless, ever since Tobey Maguire shelved his suit, two other Peter Parkers have appeared. Following Andrew Garfield’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ series, Tom Holland is the latest actor to don the Spider suit.

Fans support Kirsten Dunst's views

Not only Dunst, but several fans have also supported the theory that 'Spider-Man 4' may not be needed.

One of the fans said, "She’s spitting facts tho nostalgia heads won’t agree."

Someone else chimed in, "Agreed, Spider-Man 3 was a good conclusion to the story."

"We indeed do not need it, give us the next tom holland spidey movie," quipped the third fan.

Another social media user noted, "She may be right i fear."

"If it's gonna turn out like how people reported Madame Web was ... She's probably right," observed another fan.

Someone else added, "Hate to say it but she's right."

Another fan agreed, "I concur. As much as I loved that Spider-Man, let’s leave that saga alone. Don’t need to mess things up."

"Spider-Man 3 was perfectly fine, I agree. If they're considering going back to the older movies I think TASM 2 needs the redemption more," declared another fan.

Sam Raimi talks about ‘Spider-Man 4’ rumors

After the rumor regarding ‘Spider-Man 4’ gripped superhero fans, director Sam Raimi - who helmed the original trilogy - opened up about the reality of it.

Talking to CBR during WonderCon earlier this month, the director said, “I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!'”

He added, “I’m not sure, but I love all the new 'Spider-Man' movies. I loved 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it,” per Deadline.

After his ‘Spider-Man 3’ in 2007, Raimi went back to the Marvel Universe in 2022 with ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

Raimi added in the interview, “I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures,” before continuing, “But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”
