LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In an episode of 'The View' that originally aired on May 1, Joy Behar's candidness took a serious turn as she addressed her experience with an ectopic pregnancy, prompting an unexpected response from the studio audience.

The show's discussion, which initially centered on the 2024 election, transitioned into a discourse on reproductive rights, with Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines sharing their perspectives.

Concerns over reproductive rights in the face of potential legislation

Goldberg expressed her lack of concern about Donald Trump's potential re-election, emphasizing the importance of women's autonomy over their pregnancies. She highlighted Trump's statement about deciding the outcome of women's pregnancies, suggesting that such rhetoric might not resonate well with female voters.

“I am not worried because I do believe women, in particular, don’t want somebody who says — and he only had to say it once — ‘I am going to decide what a woman’s pregnancy is going to be',” Goldberg said. “That is what he said. I don’t think women want to hear that.”

Haines echoed Goldberg's sentiments, underscoring the broader implications of proposed legislation that defines life at conception. She emphasized the potential impact on fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF), urging people to consider the ramifications of such policies on family planning.

“The bills they are trying to pass — if it were President Trump — is life at conception,” she said. “So I just want to remind, in a country where we’re seeing a lot of fertility issues, those go off the table. Because the ‘at fertilization’ will eliminate IVF in this country.”

Joy Behar's struggle sheds light on reproductive health challenges

During this dialogue, Behar opened up about her personal experience with an ectopic pregnancy, a condition where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, which can be life-threatening if not promptly addressed. Reflecting on her ordeal, she emphasized the importance of reproductive rights and access to healthcare.

However, Behar's heartfelt revelation was met with applause from the audience, prompting her to jokingly admonish them to "shut up."

“I had an ectopic pregnancy once and if the laws were in place then, I would probably not be sitting here,” she said, before turning to the audience and joking, “For those of you applauding that, shut up.”

This reaction underscored the complexity of discussing reproductive health issues in a public forum and highlighted the need for sensitivity and understanding.

Behar had shared details of her ectopic pregnancy on another episode of 'The View' as well, recounting the excruciating pain she endured before receiving medical intervention.

“[The doctor] gives me painkillers. It disguises the pain and disguises what it was,” she said at the time. “And then I am at death’s door … In excruciating pain. I’m about to die, actually, because it was an ectopic pregnancy.”
