Speaker Johnson defends Trump's hold on GOP as Cassidy faces political fallout
WASHINGTON, DC: Fresh off a bruising political battle in Louisiana that sent shockwaves through Republican circles, House Speaker Mike Johnson, while speaking to Fox News on Sunday, May 17, made one thing crystal clear: in today’s GOP, no endorsement carries more force than Donald Trump.
Johnson’s remarks come as Senator Bill Cassidy faces political fallout back home, fueling a conversation about loyalty, dissent, and Trump’s grip on the Republican Party.

Mike Johnson warns RINOs
During the interview, Johnson reflected on Louisiana’s high-stakes political contests and acknowledged the influence Trump continues to wield over Republican voters.
“President Trump has a huge influence in our state, as he does still across the country,” Johnson said. “You see that over and over in all these elections. It’s the most powerful endorsement in the history of politics, and it continues to be shown.”
Johnson’s comments followed a turbulent Louisiana race where he said voters faced “a difficult choice” between several high-profile candidates.
But the political subtext extended far beyond Louisiana.
When asked whether Cassidy’s political troubles signaled there was no longer room for dissent inside the GOP, Johnson pushed back.
“You see dissent here every day,” he said. “This is a vibrant party. It’s a strong party. We’re in a great position to win the midterms and defy history.”
The comments land at a moment when Trump has moved to enforce party discipline across Republican ranks, sending unmistakable signals to lawmakers who break with him publicly.
Trump's warning shots and GOP loyalty test
Johnson’s praise of Trump comes just as the president opened another front in his ongoing war against Republican defectors, this time targeting Lauren Boebert.

Trump erupted on social media after Boebert appeared alongside Thomas Massie, one of the few Republicans who has openly challenged him on major legislation and foreign policy.
“Anybody who can be that dumb deserves a good primary fight!” Trump wrote, threatening political consequences for Boebert’s support of Massie.
Boebert, however, refused to back down, responding, “I knew the risks, I was, and will be, America First, America Always, and MAGA.”
Yes, I saw the President’s post.

No, I’m not mad or offended. I knew the risks when I agreed to stand by my friend Thomas Massie.
I was, and will be, America First, America Always, and MAGA.

At the same time, Johnson also weighed in on another politically sensitive issue- Black voters and Louisiana’s redistricting battle.
Defending the recent court ruling on congressional maps, he argued that districts “cannot be drawn on the basis of race” and called the previous map “an unconstitutional gerrymander.”
