MIAMI, FLORIDA: Republican Sen Marco Rubio said it would be an "honor" to be considered for former President Donald Trump's running mate in his 2024 race.

"I think anybody who would be offered that should be honored, but I've never spoken to anybody in the Trump world about it," the Senator from Florida told NBC News on Thursday, March 21.

The outlet reported that Rubio's name was among the many options considered for a likely vice president contender.

In his brief interview with the portal, Rubio opined, "Anybody who would be offered the chance to serve their country as vice president should consider that to be an honor. I mean, that's why I'm in public service."

However, he added that he has not spoken to the GOP presumptive nominee or his former aides. "If that changes, I'll let you know," Rubio said.

He endorsed Trump in January despite his earlier criticisms, where he called the former president "an embarrassment" and a "con artist."

A longtime Florida GOP operative confirmed the possibility to NBC News, "It's pretty clear from Trump's orbit that Rubio is in play. It makes sense because he checks almost every box to see if they can get past both, being from Florida."

However, the Senator faces a constitutional block to be Trump's VP as the Constitution bars electors from voting for presidential and vice presidential candidates inhabiting the same state. For instance, in the 2000 election, Dick Cheney, a Texas resident, shifted to Wyoming before becoming the running mate of Texan George W Bush.

Despite speculations, Trump has not chosen anyone for the No 2 slot. Nevertheless, a long list of Republicans who could fill the coveted position is being circulated. This includes Rep Elise Stefanik, Sen Tim Scott, South Dakota Gov Kristi Noem, Rep Byron Donalds, and former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

Meanwhile, Florida Governor and ex-GOP presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis has already ruled out the possibility. Trump revealed that his former GOP opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, would not be his VP either but might be considered for a cabinet position.

Internet slams Marco Rubio

Outraged at Rubio's interest to be Trump's running mate, netizens lashed out at him.

One user remarked, "Because, as we all know, Rubio is a spineless coward."

"Marco Rubio has become a huge disappointment," another person wrote.

A third added, "Rubio lacks courage and integrity, displaying no decency or honor as a public figure."

"Not a shred of dignity left in my senator," read a response.

A fifth individual wrote, "If he had any integrity, he would turn it down and refuse to endorse this criminal."

"The only reason he would be ‘honored’ is bc he knows that Trump is old and may not make it through another 4 year stint. He knows where that will take him. He’s not a Trump loyalist. He’s a selfish politician who wants the power of the presidency," someone else chimed in.
