Tamayo Perry shared his experience of surfing in 'the world’s deadliest wave'

Perry was pronounced dead by paramedics after being brought to shore by jet ski. He was also a lifeguard, and an instructor who described his experiences on the Oahu surfing, also called “the world’s deadliest wave.”

"This small time island boy can bang it out with the world's best." He also said that several years ago, he was involved in "a freak accident that turned into a near-fatal experience."

Perry didn't elaborate on the incident but said it happened due to someone else's "lack of awareness," per BBC.

Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager said Perry was "a lifeguard loved by all," and shared that he was well known on Oahu's north shore and globally.

"Tamayo's personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more. Our condolences go out to Tamayo's family," he shared.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi joined Lager, and said Perry's death was "a tragic loss."

"Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected, [he] grew up right over here, and just a great member of our ocean safety team," he said during the press conference.

Blangiardi shared it was "hard to imagine," after getting a call on Sunday, they informed Perry's family about the tragic death.
