'American Idol' Season 22 judge Katy Perry rejects 'next Taylor Swift' Payton Riley
'American Idol' Season 22 contestant Payton Riley, dubbed by fans as 'the next Taylor Swift', faced a surprising setback in the competition. The aspiring 15-year-old singer performed her original song, 'Fireflies', and stated that she wrote the song to get over her breakup and deal with the heartache. Payton characterized her sound as 'Country & Christian Music'.
Katy Perry was not persuaded despite Payton's moving rendition of the song. Given Payton's youth and need for additional experience, the judge on the ABC show rejected her. "And if you’re doing this at 15, you’re onto something," Katy remarked. "It’s just because you’re in the growing phase, and I would hate to pull you out prematurely. I’d say try it in three years, at 18, and you’d have a real shot."
