'Terrible mistake': Internet in shock as Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie miss out on key Oscar nominations
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Barbie' star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig missed key Oscar nominations on Tuesday, January 23.
The duo was snubbed in the best director and best actress categories disappointing the fans despite their film being nominated for eight Oscars.
Greta Gerwig makes history with three Best Picture nods
Greta Gerwig, who directed and co-wrote 'Barbie', became the first woman to have directed three films nominated for best picture at the Oscars.
Her previous films, 'Little Women' and 'Lady Bird', have also received the top honors.
However, Gerwig was not recognized in the best director category, only including one female nominee, Justine Triet for 'Anatomy of a Fall.'
Gerwig did receive a nomination for best-adapted screenplay, along with her husband and co-writer, Noah Baumbach.
Besides this, the movie also received nominations for Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera and Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling. It also scored nominations in Best Costume Design, Best Original Song, Best Production Design.
Margot Robbie, who starred as the titular character in 'Barbie', and also co-produced the film, was also overlooked in the best actress category. Robbie was also praised for her comic timing and physical comedy skills.
Internet reacts with outrage and disbelief against Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie Oscars' snub
Many fans and critics took to social media to express their shock and disappointment at the Oscar nominations, especially the exclusion of Gerwig and Robbie.
Some accused the Academy of being sexist and biased while others pointed out the irony of 'Barbie', a film about female empowerment, being ignored in the major categories.
“I realize everyone is shocked (me too) that the academy didn’t nominate #GretaGerwig, but damn if this is NOTHING new. Denis Villneueve wasn’t nominated for best director for #Dune Despite all its noms. The Academy ladies and gents. #Oscars2024,” a X user wrote.
“Seriously - how can @Barbie be nominated for EVERYTHING but best director? Yep clearly the gender issues in Hollywood are fixed,” wrote another.
“Another disastrous shocker at the #OscarNoms for Best Director. Leaving #GretaGerwig out is just a terrible, unfair mistake. At least #Oscars2024 nominated #JustineTriet. Oh well, at least #MartinScorsese and #ChristopherNolan are there.” wrote one more.
“Ryan Gosling, while deserving, got an Oscar nomination for 'Barbie' while Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn’t? Completely proving the point of the movie in 20 f*****g 24 you cannot make this up #Oscars2024 #Oscars” wrote another.
“Seems really odd to me how #Barbie could be nominated for best lead actor, best supporting actress and even best film, but they don’t acknowledge Margot Robbie as lead actress (the heart and soul of the film) or Greta Gerwig as director,” another user wrote.
“Of all the Oscar nominations 'Barbie' got this morning, it really is a shame that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig missed out for Best Actress and Best Director 😕” one more wrote.
“So you’re telling me they nominated Ryan Gosling but not Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig for 'Barbie', a film based on WOMEN?!?!? #Oscars2024” wrote another.
“Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie literally gave us 'Barbie' by directing and acting, and were snubbed??? #Oscars2024” asked one.

'Oppenheimer', a biopic of the physicist who led the Manhattan Project, led the field with 13 nominations followed by 'Poor Things', a dark comedy based on the novel by Alasdair Gray with 11.
The 'Killers of the Flower Moon' got 10. Maestro received seven and 'American Fiction', 'Anatomy of a Fall', 'The Holdovers', and 'The Zone of Interest' got five.
