WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, a far-right GOP lawmaker from Georgia, has proposed two amendments to foreign aid bills that could potentially create trouble for the Republican leadership.

The first amendment calls for the development of "space laser technology on the southwest border" of the United States while the second amendment mandates that policymakers who support providing aid to Ukraine be conscripted into Kyiv's military.

The "space laser" amendment is intended to be a part of the bill that allocates $26.38 billion in aid to Israel, however, it is uncertain whether the Republican leadership will allow it to be put to a House vote, per the New York Post.

What did Marjorie Taylor Greene say regarding her proposed space laser technology?

The MAGA-aligned congresswoman posted on X, “Israel has some of the best unmanned defense systems in the world. I’ve previously voted to fund space lasers for Israel’s defense.”

“America needs to take our national security seriously and deserves the same type of defense for our border that Israel has and proudly uses,” she wrote.

Greene also proposed an amendment as part of the $60.8 billion Ukraine package stipulating that "any Member of Congress who votes in favor of this Act shall be required to conscript in the Ukrainian military."

Rep Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), one of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s political adversaries who responded with an amendment of his own, dubbed her “Vladimir Putin’s Special Envoy to the United States Congress".

The Florida Democrat also suggested renaming Greene's congressional office the ‘Neville Chamberlain Room,’ alluding to the British Prime Minister who was charged with feeding Hitler's machinations.

The issue of foreign aid has emerged as a contentious topic among Republicans, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) facing opposition from some members of his own party.

In particular, Rep Greene has been a vocal opponent of revitalizing Ukraine's lethal military aid and has even proposed amendments aimed at diverting funds from that package to address other domestic concerns.

Despite pleas from Democrats and foreign leaders to provide aid to the embattled eastern European country, House Speaker Johnson decided to split the $95 billion supplemental package into four separate bills, allowing members to vote on each item individually.

He plans to combine the bills using the MIRV rule and send a single bill to the Senate, with a fifth bill on border security expected to be sent separately if it passes the House of Representatives.

Lately, Rep Greene has emerged as a prominent face of the opposition to Speaker Johnson's approach, threatening a motion to vacate the chair that would remove him as Speaker if it passes.

She has also criticized Johnson for expediting spending bills she opposes, including the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and now with the aid to Ukraine.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Wednesday, April 17, “My philosophy is you do the right thing and you let the chips fall where they may,” adding, “If I operated out of fear of a motion to vacate, I would never be able to do my job.”

The situation has created a rift within the House GOP, with Johnson's leadership position at risk. While some members support the Republican House Speaker's methods, others share Greene's concerns about foreign aid and the allocation of funds to specific issues.
