'The Simpsons' showrunner hints at how the series might end: 'It's sort of an impossible thing'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Is the end of ‘The Simpsons’ in the cards? Well, according to showrunner Matt Selman, the "show isn’t meant to end."
As one of the most beloved shows in the history of American television, 'The Simpsons' started its journey in 1989, and has been going stronger ever since.
However, as the series premiered its Season 36, the animated show shocked its viewers by naming the pilot episode, "Series Finale." It was later revealed the entire plot of the episode was generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
However, showrunner Selman is now weighing in on the possibilities of the show’s actual end, as he talked to the New York Post about a possible finale.
'The Simpsons' showrunner says he would want the series finale to be a 'regular episode'
Talking to the outlet for the show's Christmas special, "O C’mon All Ye Faithful," Matt Selman shared what led to the creation of the shocking "Series Finale" episode in the first place.
"The discussion that it would be so hard to do a last episode is what led to the fake series finale," he shared.
Voicing the sentiment of millions of fans, he said, "That it’s sort of an impossible thing," before doubling down, "The show isn’t meant to end."
The 53-year-old continued, "To do a sappy crappo series finale, like most other shows do, would be so lame. So we just did one that was like over the top."
He further divulged that if and when the real show’s finale will come, he would want it to just be "a regular episode."
"The characters in this crazy show don’t age … I think later we’ll just pick an episode and say that was the last one. No self-aware stuff. Or, one self-aware joke," Selman explained. He also shared that he would prefer if the show’s last episode was just "a really good story about the family."
Matt Selman shares the 'laziest idea' for 'The Simpsons' end
Matt Selman further added that many viewers’ ideas for a series finale "are based on having watched other last shows."
Emmy-winning 'The Simpsons' writer Carolyn Omine too weighed in on the matter as she shared with the outlet, "I’ve heard a few people say ‘I think it should be this’ or ‘I think it should be that.’ And it’s hard, because what the show is kind of keeps changing. So it can’t be the idea you’ve had in your pocket for a while."
Selman elaborated on the idea, saying, "And I don’t think it should be a response to the litany of last shows that already exist. We covered that area," referring to the faux "Series Finale" episode.
He concluded by joking, "[The last episode will be] a parody of ‘A Christmas Carol’ with [Mr Burns] as Scrooge. The laziest idea!"
