'The View' co-hosts discuss Trump's conviction and potential jail time following hush money trial verdict
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin appeared together at the Hot Topics table to discuss the conviction of former President Donald Trump at the hush money trial and his chances of ending up behind bars on Friday, May 31 episode of 'The View.'
The previous day, a New York jury found Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, marking a historic moment as the presumptive GOP nominee became the first former President of the United States to be convicted of any crime.
The penalties that Trump could face include fines and up to four years in prison on each count. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11, just four days ahead of the Republican National Convention.
Whoopi Goldberg shares why she wants Trump in jail
Sharing that she was happy to see that "the justice system can work," Goldberg told her fellow panelists, "I want the judge to give him (Trump) six months (behind bars)."
"I want him to give him six months because one of the things that we’re hearing from all these young men that we’ve been talking to is that they love him because he has no consequences. 'He’s a man.' They keep talking about how manly he is. ‘He doesn’t have to do anything,’" she proceeded to justify her wish.
"And I feel like, if we’re going to treat this man, who used to be president, like everybody else – you’re convicted of felonies? You gotta do a little bit of time. And then you have to say to the judge, ‘You know, I did this. I’m sorry.’"
"This is what you all would have to do if you were trying to get out..." Goldberg said, addressing the crowd, as Navarro quipped, "Show remorse."
Sunny Hostin's take on Trump's possible sentencing
Hostin claimed to have been in touch with "someone from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office," who believes that "they will recommend a one-year term in prison" for Trump.
WILL TRUMP SERVE TIME IN PRISON? After a New York jury found the former president guilty on all counts in his hush money trial, #TheView co-hosts question if he will serve time. https://t.co/cVclFZQU98 pic.twitter.com/yXGX06QPwz

"That is because when you spend a year (or under) in prison in New York, you serve in Riker's Island," she continued as the audience gasped and applauded.
"The other that they will do this is because he has shown an utter disregard for our institutions. And prosecutors, when you are recommending a sentence, you are not just recommending a sentence so that they can be rehabilitated or so that they can be punished, you are sending a message to the community that this is not going to happen again. This is not okay."
"There is another thing that they will likely recommend is a 6 months split - 6 months at Rikers, and then the rest four and half years of probation, that is under the New York law... When you violate parole, there is a Violation of Probation hearing (VOP). You have to show up for probation. A man with the temperament of a toddler cannot withstand all of the things you have to do on probation, and that means he could be sent back to Rikers," Hostin added.
