‘The View’ host Joy Behar disputes Sara Haines’ claim Trump tried to ‘woo Black voters’ at NABJ event
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: On the Thursday, August 1, episode of 'The View,' co-host Joy Behar interrupted Sara Haines when she claimed that Donald Trump attempted to “woo Black voters” at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) event.
Trump faced a tough 36-minute interview conducted by Rachel Scott of ABC News, Kadia Goba of Semafor, and Harris Faulkner of Fox News on Wednesday, July 31, where he was questioned about his past remarks on race and gender, particularly his comments regarding Vice President Kamala Harris.

Joy Behar refutes Sara Haines' claim about Donald Trump's intentions
Sara Haines said Donald Trump was courting Black voters at the event.
“He shows up to this Black event wanting to woo Black voters by saying the most offensive things," said Haines.

Behar interrupted her. “I don’t agree with that. I don’t agree that was his motive,” she said.

She argued that Trump’s appearance was actually aimed at "signaling" his base to mobilize support among racist voters.
“My point is that he was really working for his base right now. That was to signal his base,” Behar explained.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg interjected with humor, suggesting that Trump might have believed he could “explain where the Black jobs were", during the event, referencing Trump's remarks about a decrease in Black and Hispanic unemployment during his presidency.
'The View' co-host Sunny Hostin backs Sara Haines' claim
CNBC data shows that the unemployment rate for Hispanic Americans fell to a record low of 3.9%, while African American unemployment reached an all-time low of 5.5% in September 2019.
Sara Haines continued to argue that Trump’s appearance likely alienated voters rather than gaining support.
Joy Behar further suggested that Trump was intimidated by Black women interviewing him and was “petrified” of debating Vice President Kamala Harris.
Co-host Sunny Hostin supported Haines' view, saying, “The other thing is, I do think he was trying to woo Black voters. Because he said—he lied at it—but he said ‘I’ve been the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln.’ He also said … he claimed to have saved historically Black colleges and universities, Obama did that and he just signed a continuation of the funding.”
Donald Trump faces backlash at NABJ event for remarks on Kamala Harris
During the NABJ event, Donald Trump drew criticism for claiming he did not know Kamala Harris was a Black woman, suggesting she had previously identified as Indian.
He accused Scott of attacking him in a “horrible manner” as she questioned him about his previous remarks concerning former president Barack Obama, some Black district attorneys, and former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley.
The event sparked significant backlash from Black journalists and public figures, leading to Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah stepping down as NABJ co-chair just hours before the interview. Fox News’ Harris Faulkner, one of the event’s moderators, criticized the media for using race to “divide” the country.
