'The View' host Whoopi Goldberg makes on-air blunder, calls Nikki Haley 'former Republican candidate'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: ‘The View’ is back from its winter break and the hosts started their segments by catching up on some of the breaking news that they missed over the last few days. One of the topics covered included GOP candidate and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley’s response to a question about the Civil War.
As moderator and co-host Whoopi Goldberg announced the topic, there was a brief mishap where Goldberg addressed Haley as a “former Republican candidate,” despite her still being a part of the Republican primary as the Presidential election comes closer. Nevertheless, Goldberg was also quick to correct herself following the mistake.
Whoopi Goldberg apologizes on air
‘The View’ moderator and co-host Whoopi Goldberg introduced the segment on Nikki Haley to her fellow co-hosts and said, “So, former Republican candidate and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is doing major damage control for the way she responded to what should have been a pretty basic US history question. Take a look.”
After this, ‘The View’ played two clips of Haley, one where she did not mention slavery as a cause of the Civil War, and the second where she corrected herself for the aforementioned mishap that went viral in no time.
After the clip ended, the camera panned back to Goldberg, who was quick to apologize. “I'm sorry, apparently I said that Nikki Haley was a former candidate.”
Joy Behar chimed in and said, “She’s a candidate.”
Goldberg once again corrected herself and said, “She's a present candidate, okay.”
Sunny Hostin asks about Nikki Haley’s poll numbers
After Whoopi Goldberg corrected herself twice during the segment, Sunny Hostin joined the conversation and asked, “What is she polling at? 3% or 5%?”
Goldberg responded, “Look, I just forgot to say she was a candidate. Stop trying to dig my grave for me.”
As the audience and co-hosts on ‘The View’ had a good laugh over Goldberg’s remarks, the co-host shifted the topic from her mishap and said, “She also said that that question was a gotcha question…Nikki.”
Behar interjected, “Whenever they don’t like the question, it’s a gotcha question.”
Goldberg then continued, “Look it was slavery, slavery straight up. Slavery. Every time people try to change that, we need to change it back. You're old enough to know better. You read the history books. You know what was happening.”
“One side said we want the slaves. The other side said we don't and went to war. Don't sugarcoat this. That's what it was,” said Goldberg, prompting a huge round of applause from the live audience.
