WASHINGTON, DC: Green Day’s Super Bowl LX pregame performance on Sunday, February 8 drew criticism after the punk rock veterans appeared to dial back their trademark political edge.

The band, who honored generations of Super Bowl Most Valuable Players with performances of Holiday and American Idiot, opted not to include the pointed anti-Trump and anti-MAGA lyric changes they have frequently used in recent years. The omissions left some NFL viewers and longtime fans disappointed, particularly given Green Day’s history of vocal political commentary.

Green Day’s Super Bowl LX pregame set quickly sparked backlash online, with critics accusing the band of softening their message on one of the biggest stages in American entertainment.

One X user wrote, “Disappointing show by @GreenDay ....skipping full verses of Holiday & American Idiot out of fear of angering Maga. Pretty cowardly if you ask me. I expected real protest from them. They sounded good though for 50 years old."

Another user slammed the band for missing an opportunity to make a statement in front of millions, writing, “green day skipping the entire middle of american idiot with the ‘anti maga’ lyrics when they had the chance to sing it in front of millions during the current political state of our country is such a b***h move sorry."

A commenter added, “green day could've blown that s**t up more than just by doing two political songs and cutting out the sauce from them.”

A disappointed fan said, “Green Day turning out to be performative losers was a pretty big disappointment. They talk a whole bunch of talk but when given the opportunity to play at the biggest event in America they don't f**king say anything meaningful. What a complete joke of a band.”

One more commenter said, “Don’t think they’re afraid of angering MAGA! If you know Green Day you’d know better. I think it was out of respect for the NFL MVPs of previous super bowls. And I thought that was a classy move on their part!”

A fan mocked, “Nick  maybe you should get back out on the streets in Minnesota and blow your whistle like a cry baby b***h.”

Green Day previously blasted ICE agents at Super Bowl pregame party

The criticism came just days after Green Day delivered an explicit political message during a Super Bowl pregame party on Friday, February 6 at Pier 29 in San Francisco.

During that show, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong directly addressed ICE agents from the stage.

“To all the ICE agents out there, wherever you are, quit your sy a** job. Quit that sy job you have,” Armstrong said. “Because when this is over — and it will be over at some point in time — Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, JD Vance, Donald Trump, they’re gonna drop you like a bad f**king habit. Come on this side of the line."

Armstrong also dedicated part of the performance “to Minneapolis” amid protests and the recent shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

At the same event, he altered the lyrics of Holiday from “the representative from California has the floor” to “the representative from Epstein Island has the floor.”

Armstrong has long been openly critical of President Donald Trump and has repeatedly changed the lyric “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” from American Idiot to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” during recent live performances.

For some fans, the contrast between Friday night’s fiery remarks and Sunday’s more restrained Super Bowl set only intensified the backlash.
