Thrice divorced Whoopi Goldberg says she had last-minute jitters before marrying 'every single time'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Whoopi Goldberg, the 68-year-old co-host of 'The View', has been open about her experiences with marriage.
She has been married and divorced three times, with her last marriage to union organizer Lyle Trachtenberg ending in 1995.
Whoopi Goldberg’s ‘11th hour panic’ before each wedding
During a recent episode of 'The View', the panel discussed a survey of recently married people which found that 20 percent of respondents had second thoughts at the last minute and almost backed out of their weddings.
Goldberg admitted that she had experienced the same ‘11th hour panic’ before each of her weddings.
"Every single time, right?" Joy Behar quipped as Goldberg recalled a moment when her mother tried to convince her to leave one of her weddings after realizing she was having second thoughts.
“Just get in the car, I can see you don’t want to do this," Goldberg recalled her mother's advice.
Despite her doubts, Goldberg went through with the wedding because she had invited many people and spent a lot of money.
Her mother responded by calling the decision “dumb.” Goldberg humorously added, “And she was right all four… three times!” causing her co-hosts to burst into laughter, the Daily Mail reported.
Goldberg vowed never to marry again, stating, “Not happening!”
Whoopi Goldberg’s take on marriage: ‘I just party now’
Alyssa Farah Griffin, who married her husband Justin Griffin in November 2021, advised, “Also if you want the wedding and not the marriage, you shouldn’t be getting married. The wedding is just a party, the marriage is what you need to…”
Goldberg interrupted to say, “That’s why I don’t do it anymore! I just party now,” as co-host Sara added, “Ditch the husband, bring the party!”
“Oh yeah, get out of my house, get out of my bed! Not happening!” Goldberg continued, as the rest of the panel laughed.
Whoopi Goldberg’s past marriages
Whoopi Goldberg has married thrice, including her 1973 union with Alvin Martin and her 1986 marriage to cinematographer David Claessen.
This is not the first time Goldberg has been candid about her ex-husbands on 'The View'.
In August 2023, she admitted to her co-hosts that she was "dancing and prancing" every single time her marriage ended.
The 'Ghost' star admitted that by the time her third marriage was over, she felt it was "getting expensive and boring," hinting that this is one major reason she has never said "I do" again, despite having high-profile romances with actors Timothy Dalton and Ted Danson.
